Bologna - Good Base for Tuscany?

by suzisparkes

Hi there

Does anyone have any tips on whether or not Bologna would be a good base to use (we are travelling by motorhome) in late July for approx 5-6 days as a base to see Florence, Venice, Parma etc., how far is Venice from Bologna if we drove in, or would it be better to catch a train or Bus? Is there anything else we should plan to see while in this area?

Thanks

Maybe Bologna is a good place to visit all those places but bear in mind that Florence, from my point of view, deserver more than one day, so, if yo go from Bologna, maybe you have to come back unless you decide that one day is enough; many laces to visit. Or maybe it's better to stay in Florence for two-three days.

Train: www.trenitalia.it: Chech the tmetable and prices, then, deide if it's cheaper the train or your motorhome regarding the fuel, you get lost one in the cities, car park... Florence station is in the city centre.

Other places from Florence: Lucca, Pisa, Siena.

Bus vs train: Just a few meters from the railway station in Florence, there is the bus station which serves Florence-Siena (better than trian). heck my pges because I went to oscana just a few months ago, so, I have much info. Happy visit!

Thank you very much, I will consider what we want to see in Florence and maybe take your advice and stay a couple of days.

We were in Bologna last May. You can get to Venice and back in a day but we worked out that even taking the earliest train and returning on the latest, this would allow very little time in Venice - not worth it. Near to Bologna and worth a visit are Ferrara, Faenza, Modena, Parma. Do not forget about Bologna itself, which has some extremely interesting places to visit. The traffic is manic and the centre is best avoided in a vehicle. That said, you could park outside of the old city and take the excellent bus service to visit places.

I apologize for the spelling, the faster I try to type, the more mistakes I make :(

Thanks for your info, I have just heard back from one of the campsites I have been trying to book and habe been told that their minimum stay for that time of the year is 10 nights, do you know if this is the general rule for all campsites in Italy? We have 22 days with our Motorhome and we had initially thought we could just roam about and stop when and wherever we like, it looks like this won't be possible. If we have to choose 2 bases where would you suggest?

Thanks for all your help so far!

Sure Bologna IS NOT a good base to see Florence, at least Parma, if you think to drive the motorhome. From Bologna there are a lot of trains each hour to Florence and Parma and it doesn't take a lot (faster then motorhome which take time to go inside the city), Venice from Bologna is doable, but, as mentioned, you've have to leave early in the morning and come back late at night.

Travel Tips for Bologna

San Petronio

by croisbeauty

San Petronio, who was the eighth Bishop of Bologna, is the patron saint of the town. He lived in the mid of the fifth century and came to Bologna probably from Spain. The Saint is most honoured and beloved by the citizens of Bologna, he was the one who ordered building of so-called "le sette chiese" (the seven churches), but before it he ordered the reconstructions of Bolognese homes destroyed by many conquerers. At the same time, the defending city walls were built around the town of Bologna. The October 4 is the celebrating day of San Petronio.

A place to be watched, for fashion victim!

by ludogatto about Nu Lounge Bar

In the city center near Pavaglione portico, it's the first fashion chic of the town.....a milan desiner choose the forniture, the place is nice but the people bad, they seem puppet looking each other, making comments onthe shoes, the coat, the way to keep teh bear in the hand.....one hour year is more tired than 3 hour running...u have to do the right things!!!!!

Too much crowded, the service is bad as the cocktail! Fashion victim's !!!!!!!
What they write about them:

Shrimp was fresh, the rest mediocre

by mapakettle about RU YI Ristorante Cinese

This restaurant is special, because both Ma Kettle and I agreed to eat here without any arm twisting. Odd.

It is also very handy for shoppers attending the market in Piazza Agosto, as it is located on the southern fringe of the square.

The food was just average for Chinese cuisine. We've had much better in Canada, but it was also the best we've eaten since our arrival in Italy. Mind you, our only other experience was in Verona, and that was, let us say, un-memorable. The shrimp was wonderful, very flavourful, the noodles crisp, the vegetarian rice was excellent, but the white rice was cold and hard. The sweet and sour chicken was lightly seasoned and the coating was deep fried to perfection. However, the fowl appeared to have taken flight prior to being dunked in the batter.

Ma Kettle had a mix of greens with very tender beef, but the sauce was rather gelatinous in texture. The egg rolls were too hard, crispy, and flavourless for my palet. Ma thoroughly enjoyed them.

Most annoying however, was each plate was served as it was prepared, rather than bringing everything at once. Possibly it was due to the tiny table we occupied, but we prefer to share the portions we order.

Ma Kettle enjoyed her meal, I was barely satisfied overall. You be the judge.

The worst!!!!

by ludogatto about Pizzeria PIZZAs

this is a fashion pizzeria in the heart of Bologna, in very up date now but....the service and the quality is the worst....
I was there for an anniversary dining....we reserved a table but they put us outside and it was cold ( May 2005 was cold).
The pizza was normal, but expensive...a Margherita for 9 Euros ( avarege between 5 and 6)...the beer was normal beer put in big cristal glass ...for red wine!!!!
They want to give u a chic restaurant but the service is under the stundad, expensive and they woulden't serve us the cake we have bought for our frinds....a question of health....so after a 1/2 hour waiting the bill we took the cake and we ate it onthe stair of Piazza Maggiore. Nothing

Scala della Montagnola

by Airpunk

These late 19th century steps lead from the bus station / Piazza 20 Settembre up to the Montagnola gardens (Giardine della Montagnola). It is said that the depicted figures sybolize some of the city's legends and historical stories.
