The four towers of the castle were heavily fortified, and manned continuously until danger from the tax revolts subsided in the latter half of the 1500's. Care was then taken to transform the castle into a Court Residence.
The existing castle is in fantastic condition, and is in daily use today. The surrounding moat is fed with circulating water as seen in the photos, and the drawbridge is still in operational order. The castle, built and made famous by the Este family, remains the heart and symbol of Ferrara.
Sadly, the castle was closed on the day we visited, so we were forced to settle for a walk around the perimeter instead. A word to the wise, if you plan on visiting Ferrara, don't come on a Monday.
