Travel Tips for Ferrara

Tourist office

by vysnaite

Tourist office is next to the Castello Estense (the castle). For reaching it there are maps around the city, but I don't think you'll need it. Just go to the center. then you'll see the pointers in the city to the main monuments, sightseeing places.

Local craft market

by Mikebond

A Ferrara cultural association organizes a local market twice a month. You can find there stalls with handmade things (some of them can be called art, some are very ugly) by creative people who are not vendors by profession. My mum is among them! She creates bags, pot holders, decorates objects with the découpage technique, and more.
The market usually takes place in via Garibaldi and my mum's stall is usually in front of palazzo Bentivoglio (n° 90).
The next 2008 markets will take place on 7th June, 14th June (however, the two June markets will be at Piazza Castello, near the castle). If you are in Ferrara, this can be an interesting way to spend your free time.

Il Palio di San Giorgio: She-ass Race

by von.otter

“This is the Palio degli Contrade, ‘the palio of the districts.’ The races went at murderous pace; they were held in Ferrara on Saint George’s Day.”
— from “Fun and Games in Old Europe” 1986 by Walter Endrei and László Zolnay

A DAY AT THE RACES The races were not always between the city’s contrade, neighborhoods; but were contested among the nobility from near and far. They would bring their best horses to compete. Races for men, women and donkeys were added over the years, with their own rules and prizes.

The third race was for donkeys, or she-asses, asine; it is also known as il Palio di San Maurelio. Riding a donkey named Baracus, Cristiano Occhi won the prize for Borgo San Paolo.

Church of Sant'Agnese

by aliante1981

The church has some of the most ancient origins of all the religious buildings of Ferrara. First it was a Benedictine community church which went to the Este family, and later became a parish church. Since 1936 and up till 1963 it belonged to the Ferrara University.

The looks one sees today are not the original ones, because the church underwent many restorations. But the works of year 1936 restored the architectural features of the 15th century. Thinking of it, thatýs the only instance of restoration works of this kind that I can remember.

The inside still preserves decorations dating back to 18th century, as well as 19th century frescoes. Itýs a pity more ancient things went lostý

Today, the church also serves as a concert hall - so check the program out!

Cathedral

by prleprle

The Cathedral is real masterpiece! Built in early XII century and decorated in marble is mixture of Romanesque and Gotic styles. Unfortunatelly, interior is much of modern date, decoration is of 18th and 19th ct. Most outsanding freco is painted on the valnut of the apse and represent the Last Judgment.
