I have heard about the festival but have never attended. To the best of my knowledge, it is the largest festival of its kind in the World, and attracts performers from everywhere.

Travel Tips for Ferrara

The Oldest modern city in Europe

by vysnaite

When you enter Ferrara by car you can see the sign "Welcome to the city of bicycles" and it's very true! as for the most of Emilia-Romagna towns and cities (esp. Ferrara, Modena, Ravenna).
Ferrara also claims to be The Oldest Modern City in Europe and UNESCO thinks to acknowledge that.. hmm... what do ya think? =) From UNESCO website "Brief description:
Ferrara, which grew up around a ford over the River Po, became an intellectual and artistic centre that attracted the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries. Here, Piero della Francesca, Jacopo Bellini and Andrea Mantegna decorated the palaces of the House of Este. The humanist concept of the 'ideal city' came to life here in the neighbourhoods built from 1492 onwards by Biagio Rossetti according to the new principles of perspective. The completion of this project marked the birth of modern town planning and influenced its subsequent development."

Going off with a bang

by iandsmith

This splendid example of a medieval cannon is just sitting in the Piazza del Municipo for all to look and and clamber over, as clearly shown here.
Its long barrel indicates it could do considerable damage for some distance and the projectiles would have had a high terminal velocity.
The intricate patterns on its exterior were also fascinating, so unlike the unbridled smooth exterior of the British ones we have in Australia.

Via Ripagrande

by croisbeauty

Via Ripagrande is one of the most important streets in the old core of the town, running parallel to the nearby river Po. There are number of historic building, worth of note, in this street: the 15th century La Casa dei Gombi, St. Joseph's Church and the Oratory of Saints Cosmo and Damiano, the 16th century Palazzo Zuccari and the 17th century Palazzo Mayr.

When you visit Castello Estense..

by Azhut

Don't forget to buy a ticket to go to the top of Torre dei leoni (Lyon's Tower). This special tower give you the chance to see ferrara from a very high point of you. The ticket costs 1 euro and you can buy it while you are buying tickets for Museum.

Castello Estense

by croisbeauty

The four defending towers; the Tower of the Lions, the Marchesana Tower, St. Catherine's Tower and St. Paul's Tower were the sentry points of an enormous fortress surrounded by a moat much wider than the present one.
After the danger of the revolts had passed, starting from the 15th century, work was begun to transform the fort into a court residence.
