by dancnjols

We will be in Parma in mid-July - Is there a way to book a tour of the parmagiano cheese making facility?

i live just in reggio and would like to suggest you to visit above all the reggio's appennins wherein parmigiano-reggiano has the better quality. i think it coul be possible a parmigiano reggiano tour in parma, but i don't know where they could take you...there are many nice places in parma's and reggio's countries. it will be VERY hot , the last july we had also 38-40 degrees with 90% humidity,so try to go in the (beautiful)mountains so close to parma and reggio too...

Travel Tips for Parma

Piazza del Duomo

by matcrazy1

.
The Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square) is a historic center of Parma. There is Duomo facade, Baptiserium and impressive building and palaces (llok at the picture) here. Add not so many hehe tourists - it seems that Parma is not so touristy city.

The Piazza was selected for Parma's Duomo in mid-1000s as the city core was already full at that early date. The Duomo was almost 500 years old when Correggio redecorated the cupola. The Baptistery was commissioned in 1196 and overseen by Antelami until 1216, until construction was interrupted due to the lack of pink Veronese marble caused by fighting between Parma and Verona.

Laundry facilities are hard to find

by Bunsch

Given the paucity of laundromats -- I never found one -- it is probably wise to bring along a small bottle of laundry detergent (though shampoo will do in a pinch), clothes pins and laundry line. You can wash out your "smalls" each night in the sink, and periodically launder larger items when you have access to a bathtub.

What a surprise

by PALLINA about ai due Platani

Outside the Old town, difficult to find (you have to drive a car) but it worths a lot! The ambience is accurate, the service very quick and nice, people are very young. Despite of this, the tradition of Parma's dishes is really well respected and represented. They offer a wide selection of local hams&salami, but also the choice of first and main dishes is great. Do not miss tortelli di zucca (pumpkin ravioli), for istance. Desserts are also georgeus. Tortelli di zucca

Duomo

There aren’t that many romanesque churches of similar size, so Parma’s cathedral can surely be seen as something special. Construction works started as early as 1106, but large alterations took place even several hundred years later. Still, the romanesque sandstone façade remained widely untouched. The church is richly decorated, you have to search for an empty place on the wall. The fresco in the vault by Antoniuo Allegri was the first to depict a heaven scene on the ceiling. Another artpiece worth to mention is a relief by Benedetto Antelami which is among the oldest of its kind (around 1180).

Antica Spezieria di San Giovanni

by Manara

This ancient pharmacy has been here since the beginning of the XVI Century, but the monks of San Giovanni Abbey had been running a pharmacy in this area for several centuries before.
The pharmacy that can be visited now still has furniture over 300 years old, and in its three rooms you can see jars that used to contain medicines, pharmacist's tools and portraits of the most illustrious medical doctors.
