A great place to start a Parma visit

Great (4.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on July 25, 2010

We had some challenges finding the Hotel Verdi (conveniently located immediately adjacent to the Ducal Gardens) -- heck, we had a tough time finding the city center once we left the autostrada! -- but once ensconced in the Pink Palace, we were reasonably content with our choice. Our room was large and there was a terrific shower. But we'd arrived in the middle of a heat wave, and apparently the Italian idea of air conditioning is to make you slightly less uncomfortable rather than actually COOL. Despite a very comfortable bed, closing the shutters and leaving the machine running when we left our room (something I would not normally countenance), it was difficult to sleep.

But the Hotel Verdi does not believe in sending its guests out to conquer the city without adequate sustenance, and the breakfasts (again, part of the room rate) were terrific! I learned that ordering latte meant I could have two cups of delicious java, since separate pitchers of espresso and steamed milk were brought to the table -- unlike cappuccino, where only a single frothy cup was presented. Lovely breads, fresh fruit, yogurt, and an assortment of crostata were the rule. Little wrapped packets of crackers, cheese, and tea cakes were good for snacks.

Unique Quality: The hotel keeps an immense library of guidebooks and art books in the comfortable lobby. This was quite a help in planning our visit.

Only one member of the desk staff spoke acceptable English. This mostly didn't matter, except on Sunday when the desk clerk was unable to suggest any open restaurants.

Directions: Off Viale Antonio Gramsci, directly across the boulevard from Parc Ducale

Small and elegant

This is the hotel I use most often when I need to provide accommodation for business guests who come to Parma for meetings in my office. The maain reason is that the Verdi is close to my office, but it has also other qualities.
It is a small, pink building that was originally a villa and then was turned into a hotel. It has just 20 rooms. Some of the furniture still maintain a turn-of-the-century atmosphere.
The street in front of it has a lot of traffic, but only during the day. It is very quiet at night.

Unique Quality: It is convenient for those who arrive by car, because it is easy to reach and has parking facilities, but at the same time it is central enough to allow one to reach all the main attractions on foot.
The Parco Ducale is just across the street, and one of its gates is near the hotel, so if a tourist staying here wants to explore the city centre the best route is across the park. My picture here shows the hotel as it can be seen from the park.

Directions: West of the river, near the Parco Ducale
