by Jptravels4fun

Hello,
I know there are a number of castles outside of Parma and in E-R region. Are they accessible by train or bus transport? Does anyone have good website for these castles.
thank you,
John

Andrea,

If you could only visit one castle in the area, which would you recommend?

We will be driving very early one day to Liguria from the Veneto in September, and are thinking of stopping at one of the castles as a "midway point".

Do you think Castell'arquato would be okay?

Grazie!!

Betty,
I'm very sorry for the late answer, but I was travelling. CastelArquato is a very good choice, I also suggest in the area " Grazzano Visconti" a medioval village located closed to Piacenza ( S.Damiano )military airfield; on road SP654.
Have a nice journey to Italy.

Travel Tips for Parma

Portals of the Baptistery

by matcrazy1

.
The Parma's Baptistery has three splayed portals: the north and west portals are by Antelami why his students probably finished the south portal., the least decorated of the three.

BTW what does it mean baptistery?
BAPTISTERY is the separate hall or chapel, connected with the early Christian Church, in which the catechumens were instructed and the sacrament of baptism administered.
The name baptistery is also given to a kind of chapel in a large church, which serves the same purpose.
The baptistery proper was commonly a circular building, although sometimes it had eight (like in Parma) and sometimes twelve sides, and consisted of an ante-room where the catechumens were instructed, and where before baptism they made their confession of faith, and an inner apartment where the sacrament was administered.

Hanging at Piazza della Pace

by croisbeauty

I might be wrong but still, got impression that locals do avoid this island of greenery situated in the central part of the town. It was weekend time, beautiful sunny day and yet the square was almost deserted! There was group of youngsters, probably school excursion in visiting Parma, and various ethnic groups of immigrants occuping space close to Palazzo della Pilotta. The locals, as far as I could noticed it, use this square for crossing only.

enosteria?

by PALLINA about La Scarpetta

Enosteria is a fantasy word coming from Enoteca (wine bar) and Osteria (guesthouse). I find it a nice way to call their restaurant. Centrally located, it can be a nice option for a foreign tourist to taste Emilia's dishes. Pasta dishes are all home made; service is rather quick. The ambience is not too huge and can be noisy. I had Polentina con fonduta al formaggio al tartufo

Palazzo vescovile

by call_me_rhia

The Palazzo vescovile is the Bishop's palace, built in XI-XII century has changed many times its appearance, and the way we see it now dates back to the latest remodeling at the beginning of 1900's. Only the entrance door and the tower are what's left of its original medieval structure. Inside you can visit the Museo Diocesano.

The palace is open every day 9.00 - 12.30 and 15.00 – 18.30. Entrance fee is € 3,00 for adults and € 1,50 for children and over 65. You can also buy a combined ticket which allows you to visit this palace and the battistero for € 4,00; while children, groups and over 65 pay only € 2,00

Antica Spezieria di San Giovanni

by call_me_rhia

The Antica Spezieria di San Giovanni is an old spice shop that used to belong to the San Giovanni complex. No one knows exactly when it was fonde, but we know that in 1201 it was already in existence. It was in operation until 1766, then the monks gave it up.

There are three rooms inside the old shop: the sala del fuoco (fire room), the sala dei Mortai (mortars room) and the sala delle sirene (mermaids room). To buy some of the monks soaps and oils you have to head to the convent next door: I bought a bottle of a very refreshing oil made with 31 different herbs – which is good for relaxation and massages.

The old spice shop open all year round Tuesday to Sunday from 8.30 to 13.45. May to September there’s extended hours and the shop stays open on Mondays, as well. Closing times are at 18.00 or 19.00. Entrance is 2,00 € and photography is not allowed, but if you ask nicely they will not object to you taking a photo or two, provided you don’t use your flash.
