Pubs in Parma

by maliense

Which pub do you recomend me?
Do you know their web pages?
Are they close to the city center?

-The old curiosity pub
-Enoteca
-Mustiff Pub
-Hippopotamus
-Dadaumpa
-Gavanasa

Thanks a lot.

Re: Pubs in Parma

by Manara

The Hippopotamus and the Dadaumpa are disco clubs, not pubs.
The Old curiosity and the Mastiff are both central (Mastiff is closer to Piazza Garibaldi) and are classical pubs.
The Gavanasa is more expensive, less welcoming and a bit too small.
Enoteca: which one? there are several. The word just means winery. The Rangon, that you have listed among restaurants, is one. They are places where you can get something to eat, but mainly snacks, often delicious, and no main courses, because the focus is more on the wine.

Thanks a lot.
When I say pubs I mean not only classic pubs but also places with beer, music and the chance of dancing. Are Hippopotamus or Dadaumpa that kind of places?

Re: Re: Pubs in Parma

The Hippopotamus and the Dadaumpa are far too stylish to be suitable for an informal night out, and drinks are far more expensive than in pubs.
The Hippopotamus is a disco, with a younger clientele than the Dadaumpa (nobody over 30) and theme nights, for instance Tuesdays are for University students, Thursdays are gay nights.
The Dadaumpa is very stylish (for exemple you will see girls wearing tiaras there) with a restaurant.
Both are places for couples or for groups of friends. They are not places where you can expect to make friends if you go there alone.

The Onirica is still there, very lively, informal and crowded. But it is a club of the ARCI circuit, so they used to admit only people with the ARCI card. I do not know if nowadays they are strict about it or not.

Travel Tips for Parma

Garibaldi's monument

by matcrazy1

.
Garibaldi monument stands on Garibaldi Piazza (= Square) when 4 streets meet like in Roman times. It's a little neglected but worth of quick look.

Who was Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882)?
The foremost military figure and popular hero of the age of Italian unification known as the Risorgimento with Cavour and Mazzini he is deemed one of the makers of Modern Italy. Cavour is considered the "brain of unification," Mazzini the "sou," and Garibaldi the "sword."

Monumento a Vittorio Bottego

by call_me_rhia

This monument, dating back to 1907 is dedicated to Vittorio Bottego and was created by the artist Ettore Ximenes, who was a personal friend of Bottego.

Bottego was a Parma-born explorer who spent much of his life in Africa, in places such as Eritre and Ethiopia in particular, where he died on 17 march1897.

The statue is located in Piazzale Dalla Chiesa, very near the train station.

Two hundred years

by Manara about Trattoria Al Vedel

Do you know many restaurants that have been run by the same family for over 200 years? I know only this one. The owner's ancestors were running it back in 1790!
The interior decoration and furniture must have been very different at that time, not to mention the road! The food is typical of the region: tagliatelle, tortelli, Parma ham etc. If you do not know what I am talking about you have to do something soon to fill this gap. Currently, my fav is the risotto with mushrooms and 'salame fresco', i.e. the minced pork that is normally used to make salami.
If you want a vegetarian option, try the melanzane alla parmigiana, but only after a first course of the very traditional tortelli d'erbetta (with a filling of ricotta cheese and beet leaves).

The supporters

by Calcio

Parma’s supporters aren’t among the most famous in Italy. The curva parmagiani is quite small, and they don’t go many at the awaygames. Still, the atmosphere at Stadio Tardini is quite good, and the biggest group in the curva, Boys, are very loyal. Boys was built 1977, and is represented at all Parma-games, both home and away.
The homesupporters are standing in the curva Nord. While the awaysupporters stands in a sector at the other side, Curva Sud.

Monument to Correggio

by von.otter

At Parma, I tore my hair mentally at not being able to see the Correggios.”
— from “The Autobiography of Leigh Hunt” By Leigh Hunt (1784-1859)

Against one wall of Palazzo del Comune, Parma’s city hall, stands the 1870 sculpture of Antonio Allegri da Correggio, carved by Agostino Ferrarini (1828-1898), a native of Parma. Correggio is shown contemplating one of his works.
