Travel Tips for Parma

look for a "Tortafritteria"!!!

by johnmi

This horrible neologism describes snack-bars where you can eat "Torta Fritta" (lit. fried cake).
It has nothing to do with cakes... they are pasta flat rhombs fried in lard.
Accompanied by ham, possibly...
Ingredients:
300 gr. Flour
20 gr. Butter
1 glass lukewarm milk
salt to taste

Mix all the ingredients with enough water to prepare a soft but elastic dough. With a rollpin or a pasta machine make the dough 3 to 4 mm thin. Cut into pieces and fry in a lot of boiling seeds oil.

In the shade of ancient walls

by Manara

I have a special liking for cloisters, because of the sense of peace and harmony they give to me. I appreciate this feeling most if I can find it in the middle of a city. There are three cloisters here in the San Giovanni Abbey, and access is free. If you happen to visit the church of San Giovanni, I strongly recommend you to get in and enjoy, even if for a few minutes, the atmosphere of the cloisters. Upstairs you can visit also the old library, with a precious collection of medieval illuminated books.
The entrance is easy to find, close to the entrance to the church. The only thing that can be a bit confusing is the fact that you must go through the monks' shop to go to the cloisters.

The Teatro Regio

by Henrik_rrb

Beautiful building right outside our hotel in Parma. The Teatro Regio is wellknown in Italy, as it's operas.
Not a huge fan myself, but we were told it was beautiful inside. Unfortunately we were in Parma during a Sunday, and the Teatro was closed down.

If you're a fan of opera you shouldn't miss the Verdi Festival, hold to celebrate the memory of the famous Parma son Giuseppe Verdi. Around the 10th of October every year, his birthday, is the festival, with operas, concerts and messes.

The tickets for operas or concerts at Teatro Regio reminds me of the price of a football ticket. :) Goes from 16 euro and up to 150 euro. You can also stand up in the galleria to the facile price of 8 euro.

The park

by Airpunk

Somehow I think that this park is among the nicest I have seen in Italy. If there would be a ranking, it would be number 2 after Bologna’s. The “Parco Ducale” or “Giardino Publico” was once a private garden of the dukes of Parma, but is now open to the public. The castle is still a part of the park. In the park, you will find a couple of nice little things, like statues a fountain or a little island. Not very different from other parks in the world, but as I said – somehow, I liked this one more than others.

Teatro Regio

by Manara

This opera theatre was one of the things La Duchessa (Maria Luigia) gave to Parma and her subjects loved.
The people of Parma have traditionally a real passion for the opera, and the audience of the Regio has a reputation as the most critical and unforgiving. Opera singers know that no mistake will ever pass unnoticed here.
