FAMIGLIA DI NICOLINI

by lealei

Mio nonno, Francesco Nicolini, e' nato il 25 dicembre, 1896 (+/ - 2 anni). Era un sarto. E venuto negli Stati Uniti intorno all'eta' vecchio di 18-23 anni a 1915 (?) Alcuna della famiglia ha vissuto New Orleans, Louisiana (S.U.A.). Mia nonna, Rosa Sparacino.

You can check the following site:
www.ellisisland.com
It's free but requires to be joined with an account name.
This is a useful resource as it returns records of immigrants into Ellis Island that, for a period of time, was the only point of entry in the US for quarantine purposes.
Simply input the family name as a query and all returned records come with a link to the scanned ship manifest. Here, all passengers information include age, town or area in the country of origin, closest relative or friend in the country of origin, person to be joined in the US and where. It also tells if the immigrant has a ticket to proceed and how much money he/she has.

If you hardly know where your ancestors come from, the following site might help:
http://gens.labo.net/it/cognomi/genera.html
As you can see, the present distrubution of Nicolini is quite spread throughout the country but highest concentration(s) might suggest the original location(s) at the time people didn't use to relocate as much as today.

I understand you have a few family and given names to search about and I believe the Ellis Island site can be a valuable tool to combine individual records and help you tracking as the ship manifest contain information on who the person is and how he/she relates to others - spouse, brother, in-laws etc.

In my case the job is much easier as my family name is very rare (currently only 2 famiy groups in the whole of Italy, anyway split from a single group) and the town of origin is absolutely certain (north of Torino) as I have written records of family existance here since the early XV century. I traced down some immigrants into the US and I'm now in touch with their descendants with - say - 99% chances that we are truly kin.

There are other resources but I found the above to be the best ones.
Good luck.

Ciao
Ant
