The name of the island refers to the abbot Barbano ho lived there (during 6th century) when the first miracle ascribed to Our Lady was happened. The tradition tells of a strong storm which endangered a population in the year 582 AD. At the end of the storm a wooden statue of Virgin Mary appeared on the island, and as a sign of gratitude for the end of the storm a sanctuary was built.
