beyond venice
by call_me_rhia
Many people, when visiting Italy, seem to think that there's no location worth visiting east of Venice. I can't help but disagree, here: I found Trieste as charming as venice, although less eye-catching. people are wonderfully friendly and helpful, and not pretentious... and they don't try to "cheat" tourists by overpricing everything (including the air you breathe). Don't get me wrong: Venice is nice, but Trieste has a natural charm. My fondest memory is this little scenic canal in the middle of the old town centre: it reminded me of Venice, but in a positive way - and above all it did not stink of rotten fish.
The Giant Cave....
by MATIM
is considered the world’s largest tourist cave and has been included in the Guinness Book of Records since 1995; the cave is located near Trieste.
Its main feature is the “Great Hall” which is the reason why it has been included in the Guinness Book of Records. Access to this Great hall is gained through two large tunnels, which are the remains of a wide underground.karst system which thousands of years ago swallowed up two noteworthy torrents.
Christmas animals
by Mikebond
A small zoo is set up in Piazza Ponterosso (close to the Canal Grande) every year at Christmas time. A shed houses several animals that convey the atmosphere of the crib where Jesus was born: from local animals, such as goats, cows and donkeys, to exotic species like llamas and camels.
Butterfly House
by Carnation
Flutterby butterfly A feature I enjoyed visiting was the butterfly house where you will find a variety of big and small butterflies and also kolibris flying around freely. Silence is requested when entering this building so as not to alarm the insects.
When taking pictures please remember to switch off your flashlight. You will find containers with little pegs of sugar water which you can pick up to entice the butterflies to come and rest on your hands.
Timavo River
by Carnation
A river runs deep The Timavo, a river sacred to the ancients, forms at the piedmont of Mount Nevoso and is a normal river down to the small village of San Canziano, where it disappears into a chasm travelling underground for over 35kms. It is still not known to this day where parts of the underground river travel. It suddenly re-emerges not far from the coast of Trieste.
