The Cathedral

What realy stroke me down the most when I've visited the town of Udine is the beauty of its Cathedral. It is one of the most fascinating cathedrals I have seen in Italy, and trust me if I say, I've seen many of them.
Il Duomo, the imposing Cathedral of Udine, has an ground-plan in a shape of Latin cross, three naves and side chapels. The ancient part of the Cathedral dates back in 1335 when the Patriarch Bertrando consacrated new church which was built in the place of an earlier church of San Odorico from1225.

There are great number of valuable works of art in the cathedral. Most of them you can see in the side chapels.
In the third chapel you can admire the painting "La resurrazione di Gesu", a masterpice of great Gian Battista Tiepolo.
Cividale del Friuli

About 20 minutes drive east of Udine is the small, cute town of Cividale. It was founded by Julius Caesar, and there is a statue of him at the entrance to the town centre. The prettiest part of the town is the Ponte Del Diavolo, over a lovely river that is a strange shade of green/blue. The story goes that when the villagers built the bridge, they had a lot of problems, so they made a pact with the devil - he allowed them to finish it but they had to sacrifice to him the first soul to cross the bridge upon its completion. So the cunning villagers sent a dog as the first soul across! Hence the bridge's name: Ponte Del Diavolo (Devil's Bridge).
In August, they have medieval festivals in Cividale where the whole town turns medieval with fairs and parades. It really does give you a feeling of being taken back in time, esp. with the old cobble-stone roads and the ancient houses around the town.
Lago dei Tre Comuni, Cavazzo

This idyllic lake is located some way out of Udine, but worth the drive to spend a pleasant afternoon.
It is shared between three municipalities (hence the name "tre comuni"), but is more commonly known as Lago di Cavazzo.
Porta Manin
by montezaro
Porta Manin is the main gateway to the old core of the town. In the medieval times it was the defending tower and the part of the huge city walls. Unfortunately, not much of the city walls was left in the town.
On the both sides of the street, which leads to the Porta Manin, there are significant and fine designed medieval city palaces.
