Getting There
I want to travel from Rome airport to Gaiole in Chianti...not by hiring a car.Happy to use buses/trains.
Anyone done that?

you should first go by train to florence, then take a train to Siena and a bus from there... there aren't many busses to all these small destinations in the Chianti area.. so i would advise you rent a car in Siena, there are many many other and more beautiful villages in the Chianti area to see...

Get a train to Florence, then from Florence SITA BUS to Gaiole. the Sita bus station is next to the train station.
There are just two buses from Florence to Gaiole.

There are plenty of trains to Montevarchi which is the nearest town on a major train line. I am getting a train to Montevarchi and then a taxi to Gaiole. Some trains are express to Florence and then come back to Montevarchi and others stop at Montevarchi but either way that seems to be a better route

Actually the best way is to go to Tiburtina station by train from Rome Fiumicino airport (take the regional trains that go to Orte or Fara Sabina), then a SENA bus to Siena, then from Siena a suburban bus to Gaiole. Shouldn't take more than 6h even with bad connections.

How can that be more direct, simple and quicker than a 2-3 hr train direct from Rome-Termini to Montevarchi and then a 20k taxi or bus ride to Gaiole?
What am I missing? I am doing this next month so please let me know

You make it simpler than it is.
Fiumicino to Gaiole by means of train to Montevarchi implies catching a train to Tiburtina anyway. So from Tiburtina you have two options:
- 3h train to Montevarchi, then 20 km taxi
- 2h40m bus to Siena, then 20 km taxi or suburban bus.
Given the general comfort level on SENA buses compared to that on regional trains, I would have no doubt going for the bus.
I admit the two options are almost equivalent in any case.
