How to get to Venice

by drosi

Hi,

My husband and I are travelling to Italy this summer and we'd like to know how to get from the province of Abruzzo, near Giulianova to Venice by train, without having to catch the train from Rome. If anyone could help, we'd really appreciate it.

If you will go to the official rail website (www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html) and enter "Giulianova" as the start and "Venezia" (well, Venice is OK on the English pages), and a date in the next week or so that is the same day of the week as your planned trip, you will get a number of solutions from Giulianova to Venice, none of which go through Rome. Rather, these trains run up the east coast of Italy, although most of them detour inland to go through Bologna (the major rail line in the area).

Don't enter a date for later this summer, as the timetables are undergoing a change in June and have not been updated yet (and schedules more than 60 days out are iffy anyway), but since the schedules are fairly stable year round, this will give you a good idea of the number of solutions.

Note that there are 2 direct trains: one that leaves Giulianova at 8:40 in the morning and one that leaves at 16:55 in the afternoon. 'Direct' means no change of train, not 'non-stop'.

Note that some of the trains do not go to Venice Santa Lucia (the main station on the islands that most people want to go to); instead, they stop at Venice Mestre (on the mainland) and continue onward. However, there are frequent trains (and buses) from Mestre to Santa Lucia, so this is not really a problem.

If you want to see only solutions for Santa Lucia, then enter "Venezia Santa Lucia" as your destination - then you will see connections from Mestre to Santa Lucia, if they are needed.

Play with the website, and see if you have any questions...
