A Hidden Past
"Latina's Dirty Little Secret"
Italy and the Italians are understandably quiet about the history of their country between the two World Wars and most visitors will be hard pressed to find monuments from the period of the dictatorship. Latina is a good example of this hidden past. It was founded in 1932 as Littoria and was meant to showcase the New Man and the régime plans for an Italian supernation. Those sentiments have obviously long-passed and Latina is just another sleepy town in southern Lazio along the Roma-Napoli train corridor. You can still find reminders, however, of Latina/Littoria's fascist beginnings, like the fountain dedicated to the fascist Italy's supermen, or other such monuments in the main park of the town. You can see in the picture the typical fascist symbolism lauding agriculture/fertility and industry.
