Travel Tips for Rocca di Papa

World Class Equestrian Facilities

by icunme

Federal Equestrian Centre of C.O.N.I. - Pratoni del Vivaro
On a knoll in the centre of the Comunal farm of "Domatore" is the Federal Equestrian Center. It has been the centre of equestrian championships and a meeting place for horse-riders since 1960 when the equipment for the Olympic horse-riding events was installed. The equipment installed has been improved and enlarged to form an adequate spot for the preparation of the best horse-riders, offering an excellent track with a full range of difficulty and obstacle.

The Centre has an indoor school (20x60 metres) with a covered stand for the public, four jumping arenas (sand 80x90 and 40x75 metres and grass 80x110 and 85x100), two dressage arenas ( sand both 40x80 metres), one lunging area, one jumping lane, one horse-walker, one swimming pool, one steeple-chase track, a sand track of 1.300 metres, and up-hill sand track of 1.150 metres and two cross country areas. The stables are divided in blocks, each bearing the name of places where past Olympics have been organised: Monaco, Montreal, Rome, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Mexico. In addition the Centre has 240 boxes for the different competitions organised during the year .

A Day in the Park

by icunme

As we brought a picnic lunch with us, we were looking for a place to park so we could take a break and have a leisurely lunch. We saw a sign that said simply "PARK" so we continued a way and, sure enough, a huge park. I could have been in Northern California with the size of these fir trees. An expansive park with bar-b-que pits being fired by the family man - kids playing soccer (what else in Italy?) - a pavilion with gelato shop and much, much more - travelogue time, I think. If you want to be among Italian people, this is a great place - I was the only "tourist" here.

I am posting a travelogue so do visit - more photos of this park.

ROCCA DI PAPA in Castelli Romani

by icunme

"Small Town - Big Surprises"

One of the smaller among the 15 towns which comprise the Castelli Romani, 25 km southeast of Rome on the Alban Hills - it is wonderous.
Pope Eugene III lived here and 12th Century documents refer to Castrum Rocce de Papa which is Rock Castle of the Pope. In 1541 Pier Luigi Farnese, with French troops, destroyed the castle.

In 1889 the "Royal Geodynamic Observatory" was built on the top of Rocca di Papa, near the little Church of Crucified. In this facility from 1922 to 1935 the scientist Guglielmo Marconi did several experiments about the radio-transmissions, wireless transmissions and broadcast.

Rocca di Papa was bombed during World War II in 1944 and the central part of the city was destroyed. Thirty four people died in that air strike and 35 died in a second air strike on May 25. The city was liberated from Nazi German occupation on June 4, 1944 by the 85th Infantry Division.

Economy of Rocca di Papa is mostly based on tourism and agriculture, the latter dominated by wine and vine production.

HELP SOLVE THE MYSTERY - There is a particular mystery that draws some to search out the short strip of road where, if you kick a bottle down to the street or you put your car switched off in this descent, your car will never go down, but will slowly move up. More detail on the THINGS TO DO tip here.

"Medieval architecture"

Medieval and gothic architecture abound and this is only one of many villas you will see - maintained in excellent condition - and stunning in their expanse and majesty.
This villa is nestled in the hillside with other homes close by on each side.
