Delightful

Great location for visiting the Vatican, as museum entrance is just down a set of steps.
Charming hotel, family run; with delightful public rooms on the main floor, though we didn't have time to use them.
Rooms are compact by N. American standards - but very clean, with full bathroom, including shower (but be prepared to sit down to use it, unless you're about 4 ft. tall! LOL) Elevator access to all 4 floors of rooms and to roof top breakfast room. Breakfast (included) was excellent - all normal European choices, plus eggs, bacon, fish, asparagus, potatos & more. Freshly baked pastries - & choice of capuccino or American coffee. Good view of Vatican museum entrance from the roof top, which is available for afternoon or evening drinks as well - and has an ice maker. You can just go up and make yourself at home, with your own drinks.
Free shuttle to airport made the price of the hotel even more palatable.

Unique Quality: Front entrance is up 4-5 steps, but they have a lift outdoors to lift your suitcases to the entrance door level. Cute!

Hotel Alimandi

Ideally located next to the entrance to the Vatican Museum, close to St.Peter's Basillica and other famous sites and within easy reach of two Metro stations if you wish to head farther afield.

We stayed in the hotel situated on Viale Vaticano, which they said was the newer of the two. The rooms were great - very clean, warm and tastefully decorated.

Breakfast was very good - plenty of options for all tastes.

Unique Quality: The outstanding feature of the hotel was the staff. All of them absolutely charming and extremely helpful. Nothing was too much trouble! I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone.

Great location, great atmosphere

Five Stars....maybe not on paper, but this is our rating. The rooms are average sized, extremely clean, with actual towels in the bathroom. The bathroom is spacious, with tub and shower, plus little soaps etc. that are absent in many European hotels.

Comfortable beds, ample storage, and quiet surroundings. Our room was equipped with an air conditioner, with hand held remote control for heat and cooling.

The lobby is all marble, sparkling, with no fewer than four common areas, including a baby grand piano, a small bar with four stools, and a full sized pool table provided for the guests at no charge. Elevator.

The desk clerks all spoke English, and were exceptionally pleasant and polite.

Full breakfast on the roof top terrace, including scrambled eggs, and an attempt at North American coffee, plus 'far' more selection than would normally be found elsewhere. Once again, wonderful staff, willing to help in what ever way possible. No English was spoken, but somehow it wasn't necessary.

We were there for Christmas (2003), and management left a small cake in our room, and provided free wine and grappa at the bar, plus chocolates and other goodies. Nice touch, nice people.

This hotel is family run, and aims to please.
We highly recommend it to any travelor to Rome, and the location just moments away from the Vatican Museum only adds to its appeal.

We would return to this hotel without hesitation. They have just opened a 'sister' property in Rome in the spring of 2004. Worth a look...

Unique Quality: Marble entrance, and spotless interior.
Excellent location moments from Vatican Museum
10 minute walk to Vatican City
Close to Metro
safe area
lots of restaurants nearby.

Rome if you don

by russ45

Rome let me start by telling its a great place to visit. I don't think you can see all there is to see in only one day. You need to spend some time there and visit all of the sites. I stayed in Rome next to Vatican City. I used the Rick Steves travel book hotel section and found a hotel that I could drive to.

HOTELS For Rome
Hotel Spring House (3 star)
OK here are 2 hotels that are very easy to drive to if you want to take your rental car into Rome.I found these in the Rick Steves book I have listed on the Italy page. I have the map listed. Both hotels are just 1 block from Vatican wall (north side) I stayed in the Hotel Spring House. Located on Via Mocencigo 7 (please note on my map, the top of the map is north. Bottom is south.) Its a street that runs north and south. If you look at the top of the Vatican wall that is the north side. Cost with breakfast was about 75 dollars a day. To park the car it cost 12 dollars a day.

Great place they speak english. Close to metro, rooms are good, beds sleep good and its quiet.

Hotel Alimandi (3 star)

This hotel is located on Via Tunisi 8. The street is just east of Mocenigo, this street runs north and south on the north wall of the Vatica. But note if you stay there its on the corner of Via S. Veniero and Via Tunisi. Just a short walk to the Vatican museum from here. Parking garage they have to leave your car. Prices are about 75 dollars with breakfast. Parking for your car is about 15. A good hotel, for the price.

Also they have free pick up from airport if you like. Can you get any better deal than that.

Hotel Alimandi?

by loum140

We will be staying two nights in Rome pre-cruise -- our second visit to Rome. The Hotel Alimandi, near the Vatican, looks like it fits the bill for us and will be very convenient for St. Peter's, the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel, which is what we really want to focus on this trip. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I know nothing about the hotel per se, although the reviews on trip-advisor.com are almost unbelievably wonderful.

Indeed, this hotel is located just a stone's throw from the Vatican Museums entrance, which is how you get to the Sistine Chapel. As for getting to St. Peter's itself, while you can get to the Basilica through the Museums, it will be easier (if you want to skip the lines) to go around the wall, through Piazza del Risorgimento and down to the Piazza di San Pietro.

Note that you have a Metro stop quite close to you if you want to head to another part of town. In the meantime, you are in a nice resdiential neighborhood, and I know that to the east in the direction of Piazza del Risorgimento, you will find plenty of bars (Italian, that is), restaurants, and the like (I say this only because I haven't been in the back streets to the north of the Vatican). It's a nice enough area...

Bill: Thanks for the quick response. I have read the reviews on Trip Advisor and Fodors and they all say nice things about this hotel.

My wife and I stayed there in November. We have nothing but nice things to say about the hotel. It is ideal for a visit to the Vatican. It is actually directly across the street from the musuem entrace. Our review is one you probably read. We a beautiful room with marble everywhere. Flat screen tv, and a great staff. You shouldn't be disappointed. Dean
