When in Rome you must visit...
by tim123
When in Rome you must visit the Vatican, the Forum, and the Colessium. Each a magnificient pieces of Rome and a absolute must to visit. Even though each is very crowded they are fabulous. When I think of my favorite attraction in Rome it would be the Pantheon. For me, this is one of the incredible buildings of the World. Admiral Agrippa, who defeated Anthony and Cleopatra at Actium, dedicated the Pantheon in 27 B.C. (it was extensively restored by emperor Hadrian shortly after 110 A.D.). The Pantheon is the best preserved, in fact, of all great Classical monuments. To me it is a breathtaking building mostly for it's magnificient dome, which has inspired many important buildings since it was built.
Buy a book

So you're in Rome. And you think you know about history. Well, let me tell you: YOU DON'T. So don't be a smarta** and buy a book about Rome. It'll all make sense while you visit the places and read about their history. It will help you. And then, after you visit the city, send me a note and thank me.
Books and old cards
by miedje
In Rome at the piazza della Republica are a few book stands with very cheap secondhand books. Though most books are Italian you can find a lot of books about art there with great pictures. They're worth buying even if you can't read Italian.
There are also a lot of old cards of Roman monuments. Tourism in Rome seems to be of all ages and so are these cards. It's nice to see how some of the monuments looked so many years ago. You can even find out what the people thought about it, because some of these cards still have their stories on it. I used to pay 3.000 lires for those nice art books. That should be 1,5 euro now. I don't remember how expensive those cards where, I presume only a few cents.
There are also nice, but very expensive old maps.

Roman Cuisine
by seagoingJLW about Foods to Try
Cooking in Rome has very old traditions. Fettucine or bucatini all'amatriciana came from the country kitchens where one always had bacon, olive oil, and fresh tomatoes.
Coda alla vaccinara and rigatoni alla pajata< came from around the communal slaughterhouse.
