The Holy Door
by nicolettart
This picture shows the bronze Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica. This door was opened by the Pope to begin the Jubilee Year 2000, on Christmas Eve, 1999. The door was closed on the day of the Epiphany, January 6, 2001.
A very kind nun in a Vatican gift shop gave us a leftover brochure from the Jubilee year. The listed events were useless to us (as we were there in 2002), but the maps, bus routes, and street list of Rome were helpful.
Read 'I, Claudius' at the Forum and Colisseum !
by BIW
I have found that reading a book about where you're at adds so much to the journey. I spent a whole afternoon sitting in the Colisseum and Forum reading 'I Claudius'. It was amazing as I could visualize the action in the book right in front of me! The climax was when the book talked about the paintings at Lydia's house and I went to the Forum and saw Lydia's house with the paintings! Yea, I know the author saw that too but it was still a great experience (another example is to read Zorba the Greek on a Greek island).
Arriveing by bus or car to Rome
by eksvist
For people who never wasn't before in Italy it is the exciting experience...
In summer, when weather is hot, it looks like some madness arriveing to Rome. Our arrival time was at evening, when the working time was ended and peoples hurry to home.
There were hundred cars who waiting in several checkout-queues in checkpoint, to pay the road tax.
I think when you hurry to home, it is very stressful wait so in disarrangement of cars ...
we were tourists in bus with contitioner and for us it was really exciting watch for show what was happen behind the windows of our bus.
There were much to see - some peoples was eating, another couple was kissing self-forgetfully ;) ... there were young peoples sitting with feet on the control panel, there were family who pushing own car, because the radiator of car started to leak ...
And so we spend the time, till we pass through checkpoint.
Right on Piazza Navona
by martin_nl about Dolce Vita
Right on Piazza Navona we decided to have our first Roman meal. It turned out to be quite pricy, but it was great. There were some street artists playing live music and of course it's great to sit on this square too and look at the fountains and all the people passing by. Do try the steak in pink pepper sauce it is delicious! As in evry Italian restaurant drink wine because it always tastes good and is the cheapest available drink!
Piazza in the heart of Rome
by freddie18
Piazza Navona: The square is best for people watching. Not only that, it is very close to Pantheon being in the western side and the spot where street artist show their wares. There are many restaurants around the piazza which looks expensive, and they are! A variety of shops, in some cases specialty shops and lots of bars and cafes. I sat on concrete benches within the square and had spent an hour or so, with young excursionist wandering around, who I guess are students on educational tour being watched by their teacher as a leader. Had our packed lunch while watching one of the fountains in the centre of the piazza called the Four Rivers. There's one thing you need not forget. Visit the baroque church dedicated to St. Agnes which is nearby. These simple things I did, made wonders. The way of life is very different. It's interesting!
