Our cruise ship will be making a stop in Messina Sicily this fall, can any one tell me if there is any thing that can be seen on your oun, with out taking a tour. We will have about 8hr to enjoy Sicily.
Take a taxi to Taormina. It is one town you should not miss when in Sicily. It cost a lot less than a cruise tour to the same area and you are on your own time to enjoy a lunch as well. See my Messina transportation tip. Since prices have gone up it's best to ask a taxi at the port what a round trip would cost while your there unless you pre-book. Messina proper has a few things to see with the moving astronomical clock a must see. It is only a few blocks from the docks.
Thanks
Taormina is excellent - we were there in June and loved it. Even then the cost of the ship tour was a pretty good deal because we paid in dollars and the independent tours and taxis are in Euros. Seems the last time I looked, the Euro is still pretty high - double check your prices before you decide. I will tell you that those who opted for Mount Etna were somewhat disappointed - they could not get that close and it was a long day. By the way you can get excellent photos of Etna from Taormina. Good luck and enjoy! Have some Limoncello - yum yum and don't forget the gelato!
Thank you,good info.

If you want to see a holiday 'haven of rest'of Romans, visit lake Albano (south-east from Rome, 30min by car. It's a beutifull place where you can walk/run/cycle around the lake, take a sun on the sandy beach or rent a sculler and go to plow the waves of limpid water.
I found Rome's metro system to be fairly clean, cheap and not that crowded if travelling outside of peak hours. The metro in Rome only has 2 lines: Line A runs from Battistini to Anagnina through stations such as Cipro Musei Vaticani for the Vatican Museum and Spagna for the Spanish Steps. Line B runs from Rebibbia to Laurentina through stations such as Colosseo for the Colosseum. Both lines converge at Stazione Termini, the city's central railway station. Unfortunately, both lines don't go anywhere near Piazza Navona or the Pantheon areas. The types of ticket are:
BIT - Timed ticket which lasts for 75 mins after validation. Can only be used on the line purchased on. Costs € 1,00.
BIG - Integrated daily ticket which lasts upto midnight and must be validated. Can only be used on the line purchased on. Costs € 4,00.
BTI - Integrated tourist ticket which lasts for 3 days and must be date stamped before first journey. Costs € 11,00.
ok, I admit I am favouring here the gelateria of our piazza, but honestly the ice cream is one of if not THE best in town.
I got to know the father and son run firm back in February when I moved to Rome and was overwhelmed by the kindness and sheer joy they serve their clients and furthermore as I gradually got to know them better and was allowed to shoot a reportage about their business and in particular how they manufacture (in the back of the shop) the deliciuos ice cream - they do not use any conservation agents nor any colours to enhance the visual side. My favourite clearly is either a combination of cinnamon/vanille or cinnamon/pistachio ice cream, but they produce tasty frappés (milk shakes) as well, the house speciality is cinnamon/pear - clearly a must.
The Trevi Fountain is ingeniously built onto the back of a palazzo. It's crowded, crowded, crowded. Wait your turn to get a spot to throw your coins backwards into the fountain to ensure you return to Rome. Don't get mad when inevitabley someone walks into the frame as you click your camera. It's a must see.
