Cats Galore!
by deecat
As I am a real cat lover, I always notice when a cat is around. I was so aware of the numerous cats in Rome.
You've probably already heard that cats scatter to every corner and hidden niche in the Colosseum. The cats in the Colosseum are rather wild, but just as the Italians take care of their children, they also take care of the animals, domesticated or wild.Even though many of the cats I saw were strays, they seemed well fed and clean.
The photo shows a contented cat sunning itself on the steps that lead to the Arch of Constantine.
This arch, sometimes referred to as The Triumphal Arch, was built a short time before Constantine moved the capital of the Empire to Byzantium. Most historians think that it was built to celebrate Constantine's victory at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge. The relief work on this structure is amazing. The cat was remarkable, too!
Note: Even though cats are numerous in Rome, it's the Dogs who Rule in Rome!

Ferry Up The Tiber
by craic
This is a pleasant and very cheap thing to do. It's not for tourists and the info booths know nothing about it - but you do see a few tourists on it.
It goes from the river side just under Ponte Garibaldi which is on Viale di Trastevere. Opposite Isola Tiburtina. You can see the jetty and there is a notice board with sailing times. There are not a lot of sailings! Costs about 3 euros one way. When you get an hour or so up river to .... hmmm .... wish I could remember where it stops. It was a sports stadium. When you get there just pay the guard again and chuff slowly back to Ponte Garibaldi.
Great photos ops as you pass Castel St Angelo.
The company is called Battelli di Roma but if they have a web site I couldn't find it.

The best way for going around in Rome is of course walking.. 8)) But sometimes you do a plan and there can be huge distance between your must seens... The solution is simple, just take subway..
P.s. You can use the same ticket more than once in an hour.
Welcome to Roma
by nyonnetti about Gran Caffe
We went here on our first night in Rome with some friends to enjoy drinks and bread/olive oil. The outdoor seating was perfect to enjoy the atmosphere of Rome. The waiter was incredibly nice and accomodating- it was a great start to our vacation! Wine, beer, bread, olive oil-don't need much else!
They do have a menu- see website.
Chariot race anyone?
by Chiliweenie
The Plaza Narvona was the ancient site of chariot races. Remember Ben Herr ? The Haley B deMills Films made the race course much large then it actually is. Once the Christians invaded Rome, they did away with all the fun things like feeding Christians to the lions and race tracks. Now, its a tame plaza lined with pizzerias and adorned with beautiful fountains.
