Astoria Garden revisited
by A TripAdvisor Member
Having had such a great stay at the Astoria Garden in 2003, we were back in October 2004 for another week. The hotel didnt let us down, it was as good as before. For fear of repeating myself..., but here goes! - Great location near Termini, but hidden away in quiet street. Helpful staff, nice compact bedrooms and well decorated public rooms(small bathrooms, but totally functional), and absolute cleanliness of public rooms and bedrooms. Anyone with negative comments doesnt know what value for money. Its not easy finding a good hotel in a city like Rome with hundreds of 'seemingly' good ones to choose from. Would highly recommend (and do to anyone we know visiting Rome), and will revisit.

Good location, quietish street within easy luggage-tugging distance of the airport drop off/collect point at Termini [ renamed John Paul ?].
Helpful staff, clean and smart - if compact - room facilities.
Gloomy room due to external fixed louvre shutters over window.
Let down by the quality of the breakfast however; somewhat cheapskate with thin orange juice, stalish bread, warm rather than hot drinks and overall limited choice. One of the poorest breakfasts I have met in a tourist destination.
Great Hotel in a great location

We stayed at the Astoria Garden for two days in April. We were a little worried, as we arrived the day after the Pope's Funeral, but all our arraignments worked out perfectly. The Hotel is close to Termini Station which makes it very convenient. Our room was in the Garden, and was comfortable and clean. The garden was lovely, but we were not able to use it due to rain. Be sure and arrive to breakfast early, as there is a shortage of tables.
Enjoyed our stay

We enjoyed our recent stay at the Hotel Astoria Garden. The staff was warm and friendly, offering advice when needed. They treated us very well during our week there.
The hotel is located on a quiet street, walking distance from the Termini station. Every morning when we left the hotel, we walked to the Terminin station, took the subway to any of the major tourist spots, and returned in the afternoon or late evening. It was nice to be away from the tourist crowds at night by retreating to our hotel. And it was easy enough jumping on the subway to go anywhere.
The hotel rooms are simple, but decorated nicely. The room was small-not much bigger than our full size bed, but adequate. Toward the back of the hotel is a coutyard with patio furniture. This is a great place to relax at night with a glass of wine.
Breakfast is juice, coffee, deli meats, bread, and pastries. We both enjoyed the breakfast. It was more than enough to get us going in the morning and out the door.
We highly recommend this hotel and will stay here on our next trip to Rome.
Good Value for the money

We just got back from our honeymoon in Rome and the hotel was very nice for the money we spent. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially the doorman. Breakfast was decent; but not much of a variety. The breakfast room was a bit crowded at times as well and we had to get there early to sit right away. The hotel room was small; but I guess this is standard for Europe. The only problem was the air conditioning was not working properly, even though they told us it was. It's a great location. It is on a quiet side street 5 minutes from the main train station and within a 45 minute walk from almost all tourist locations, including the Vatican, in Rome. If you go to Rome, however, be wary of pickpockets as they are everywhere and getting a travel pouch for all your money, credit cards, and identification is a must. I also suggest walking everywhere with a good map and go on several guided tours as they are well worth the money. Lastly, taking the train from the airport to Rome and from Rome to other cities is very easy and will save you a ton of money over other modes of transportation. Overall we loved the city and really liked the hotel. I'm sure there are better hotels with more amenities in Rome; but if you are on a budget and looking for a nice place as a base of operations, the Astoria Garden will serve you nicely.
great location for train travellers
by TripAdvisor Member aspalm
I hate to just repeat what the other posters said, but they are all correct. The selling point to this hotel is its proximity to Termini Station, the train station for Rome. Termini is also the hub for the small but convenient subway system which is only two lines going in perpendicular directions that meet in just this one spot.
If you are not using the trains, you may prefer a location closer to the river, as it is a bit of a hike to the major sites. It never cost us more than 10 Euros to get a taxi back to Termini at the end of the night, though, so why not indulge? From Termini it is a very short walk, and you can even cut through a sort-of underground strip mall to get away from the traffic.
The rooms are quite small, and our shower would simply not work for a heavier set person. We are quite small, and we still had trouble maneuvering.
We were always up by 7:30-8am so we never dealt with a crowded breakfast room. The breakfast never appealed to me anyway, though.
The air conditioning worked great and was quite a relief after a few hours in the steamy June sun.
A word of warning: don't try the restaurant recommended by the front desk. While convenient, and the hotel does give you a 10% off coupon or something, the food was quite lousy. You will do much better crossing the street to the excellent pizza place. Great pastries there as well.
Great Budget Hotel

This hotel is great for travelers on a tight budget, it is situated 10 mins walk from the main entrance for termini station although the area does look a bit dimly lit at night it is very quite and pleasent during the day we found the staff quite friendly and helpfull during our 4 day stay the rooms are quite compact but very clean and our room had excellent air conditioning and a very nice shower room the only faults we could find were that the breakfast was very dissapointing and some of the staff spoke no english at all.The hotel also has a very pleasent garden in which to enjoy a quite glass of wine.
Very Good Value

We were pleasantly surprised to discover that, although the rooms were small, this 3 star hotel was very nice. The hotel was very clean and the staff was gracious and helpful. A continental breakfast was served that included cereals, yogurt, fresh fruit, juice, breads, ham, cheese and hot coffee and tea. We enjoyed the garden because we could leave the room and sit outside and chat. It is located near Termini Station and the Piazza Independencia. We used both the metro and the bus for transportation.
It is located on a quiet side street. There are many restaurants in the neighborhood and the University is nearby. We most definitely would stay there again.
Another high opinion

For a small, "boutique" hotel, the Astoria Garden offered excellent value, which was complemented beautifully by an attentive, knowledgable staff.
Proximity to major attractions, even on foot, was a definite plus! We will certianly be staying here again if space is available, when we next visit Italy!
