train from airport

by marcopolo58

Hi all.is it possible to purchase a weekly transport ticket at the airport station and just use that to travel to and from rome, if you don't use the express service. I have to kill a few hours anyway, and it seems its not that much slower. Also once i reach Termini, whats the best way to get to travestere.
Thanks heaps in advance

You need a separate ticket for the slower train, anyway, but it's about half of price of Leonardo Express. It takes you straight to Trastevere, so it's the best option for you - you don't have to go to Termini (slower train doesn't go there, anyway).

Yes, while the weekly transport ticket ("CIS") includes some of the urban railroads around Rome, the train from Fiumicino (I assume that this is the airport you are referring to) to Rome is not one of those urban lines, so you'll have to buy a separate ticket anyway. As noted, the train ticket on the local line is about half the price of the Leonardo Express, since the Express is priced as 1st class while the local train is 2nd class.

It is also true that the local train (the "FM1", or sometimes, the "FR1") stops at Stazione Trastevere. Note, however, that the station is way to the south (2 kilometers or so) of the traditional center of Trastevere, so you have a long walk or a relatively short taxi or bus or tram ride up closer to old Trastevere - the #8 tram, I think, runs right up Viale Trastevere from the piazza in front of the station - see www.atac.roma.it for info on Rome's public transit system...

Travel Tips for Rome

Piazza di Spagna

by croisbeauty

Being in Rome and missing the Spanish Stairs is like eating soup without a salt. What brings all this people here, what is so magnetic in this stairs making both, locals and tourists, to gather here all day and long in the night? Once you get here makes you to stay for a while, to sit down and watch the people around, smiling with them for no reason, being in good moods and sharing drinks and food with those next to you.

Baths of Caracalla

by gigina

The immense remains of the baths of the Emperor Caracalla (Terme di Caracalla) are a little outside the usual central tourist circuits. Located a short walk from the Circus Maximus, the ruins stand in a peaceful spot where, despite adjacent roads, it is hard to imagine you are in the heart of a major city. Caracalla built a huge public baths complex, of which the standing walls are a powerful reminder of the sheer scale of ancient Rome. Sculptures found here are now on display in other musuems, but some black and white mosaics are still in place, and help the visitor to picture the original state of the baths.

Lets Party

I enjoyed just going to nice bars/restuarants and trying the local foods.
Fave al Guanciale........ fresh springtime broad beans which are simmered with bacon and onion,,,,very yummy.

Crostata di Ricotta..........very tasty Roman cheesecake filled with ricotta,Marsala and lemon.

Spaghetii alla Carbonara......... chopped bacon, eggs and cheese with spaghetti....delicious.

Gnocchi alla Romana........small potato dumplings with tomato or just butter,,,,one my my favs.

Suppli.........beautiful fried rice croquettes stuffed with mozzarella cheese and i really loved these.

And always try the fine selections of olive oils and vinagers on the table.

THE MOST INCREDIBLE PIZZA

by KiraLovesTraveling about Opera

I have never had better pizza--aNYWHERE. And I'm a college student, so I should know. ;) Its deliciously thin crust, topped with a myriad of options...from artichoke hearts to egg whites to shrimp, with light, delicate sauces and delicious fromaggio, cheeses. It was the only restaurant we went back to TWICE, even though we were only in Rome for a few days. Pizza--plain and simple. Whatever you get is going to be good.

Bats in The Belfry: colonies of millions swarm

by Lornabug

Near dusk, enjoying the view from the terrace of Castel Saint Angelo near Sain Peter's (where that final showdown scene happens in Angels & Demons) we discovered Rome's bats! I couldn't take my eyes off of them, the biologist that I am, and having gone bat detecting with my fellow labmates, two of whom study bats. What a most amazing sight! Colonies of millions of bats were emerging from their various roosts in the city and flocking to the common feeding area for the night, presumably where the winds were right for insects. They are a miracle to see as they congregate and shift like demonic smoke signals. Seeing them this way, on this fantasy terrace no less, made it easy to understand the dark reputation they have garnered.

If you're in any place with a good view of the sky you should see them near twilight. I don't know much about the biology of Roman bats so I can't say if you'd see them at any time of year. I saw them in late November three nights in a row, once from the hill between Trastevere and the Vatican and once more on Via del Fori Imperiali.

Find them and enjoy!!
