the sign on the street for Hotel Margaret by sue_stone I stayed at Hotel Margaret back in 1999. At tha time the rooms had just been renovated and I felt like I was staying in a much fancier place than a 2 star hotel. The room wasn't huge, but had a nice bathroom and all mod cons. The location is great - only about 10 mins walk from Rome Termini Station, and 10-15mins walk from most of the main attractions. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed our stay.

Our plan for accommodations in Rome was very intricate and well planned: we'd get there and see what happens! Well, we got there, and based on what we read in a tour book we tried to avoid the Termini station or rather the pickpockets around that area. We took the underground to the Colosseum, and started walking hauling our little airbags with us. After checking numerous hotels (all ridiculously expensive), we landed at Family House and to no surprise we had walked almost all the way back to ... Termini! :) The Family House is clean, the staff very friendly, and the room nice. We had an extra two beds in an extra room we didn't use. We didn't have much of a view, but since we were running around all day and came home extremely exhausted, we didn't notice much of what's outside the window (courtyard with some trees). Breakfast consisted of a variety of croissants with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc., on the comfy patio of the little shop next door. The house seemed reasonably occupied from the amount of guests at breakfast every morning. Note: depending on what time of the year you get there, you might be able to negotiate a better rate. We ended up paying ~ $ 34.-- per person/night. ......................................................................................

The elegant stone staircase of Hotel Teatro Pace by Lacristina The Hotel Teatro Pace opened a few years ago in the most perfect location. Two steps from Piazza Navona, in the heart of the "Centro Storico" or historical center of Rome Even my single room was large by Rome standards -- a six by eight foot entry with large armoire -- then a step up into the main room with parquet wood floors in a herringbone pattern, a bed "alla francese" or a single bed, half again as wide as usual, making it very comfortable, a mini-bar, a matching chest with four drawers, tv, and a wall safe. Then a small alcove behind the main room, with a large window, a writing desk and chair, and a table with an electric hot kettle and the necessary coffees and teas. The bathroom! Absolutely drop dead gorgeous! Richly colored gold and gray marble floor, matched to a more sedate cream marble, topped with a soft yellow washed plaster. A shower with lots of hot water, great water pressure. Look up -- the timbered ceiling must be 5 meters high! It isn't necessary to talk about cleanliness -- everything is spotless. And it's a hotel with a sense of humor. Check out their FAQ page in English! Roberto and Fabrizio were wonderful hosts. I loved everthing about this hotel -- but you might want to know that... There is no desk service between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. in the morning -- so it's more like a B&B. Don't lose the key to your room and the front door! No elevator. This meant 70 steps up the elegant, huge spiral stone staircase. More if you?re on the top floor. There is no breakfast room (yet) so breakfast is served in your room -- you fill out a short form the night before, and the local coffee bar brings you your cornetto (croissant), coffee or tea, and orange juice precisely on time every morning. They were amazingly punctual. Also, although I normally take the #64 bus from the main train station (Termini) to get to the hotel, I don't necessarily recommend it. It's notoriously filled with pickpockets, so take good care of your posessions if you do. You could also take the #40 express. Get off both buses at Largo Argentina. A metered taxi from Termini should cost about 7-10 euros depending on day and time.

On our most recent trip to Italy, we flew into Rome. On our return to the USA, we knew that we had an early morning flight and needed to be near the airport. We learned from a kind manager [Tony] of the Canadian Hotel in L'Aquila that we needed to stay in Ostia Lido [ten minutes from the airport] because it had a free shuttle bus with early morning runs. Thus, the day before our flight out, we drove from Gaeta to the airport and turned in our rental car. Then, we caught the free shuttle bus from the airport to the Airport Palace Hotel. We did not have reservations, but we were able to get a room. This is a four-star hotel that is expensive, but we were able to get it for 20 Euro less just by asking. The hotel is quite large with an elegant reservation area, a big bar area with live entertainment nightly, free breakfast for us the next morning, and all the "bells and whistles". We were only interested in the fact that it was close to the airport, had a free shuttle early in the morning, had a great bathroom and firm beds.
This 4-star Airport Palace Hotel is quite convenient, clean, efficinet, and friendly. However, I was not at all impressed with the area in Ostia Lido. It's not an area that I would walk around by myself. I guess we were quite spoiled about staying in quaint areas where we felt safe at all times. This was the only place we were on this trip where we saw homeless, beggers, and groups of teens with mischief on their minds. However, we were able to find a place to eat pizza rather near the hotel, but it was not easy. The shuttle bus situation is OUTSTANDING!. Courtyard entry to the NAVONA GALLERY SUITES by travelgourmet, 4 more photos Ciao, Roma, ciao Navona Gallery Suites. Both are bella and at the Navona Gallery Suites you feel the full vibe of Rome. Only a short walk to Piazza Navona, and Campo De' Fiori. The owner, Giampiero Carnovale, makes you feel like famiglia. He truly is a delight to have met. He works out of his quaint Antiques Store, two doors down. Oh, yes, his brother-in-law, Dennis Winter, D.D.S. (Dennis the Dentist) from Denver, Colorado, now lives in Roma and practices Dentistry in his and his wife's (Loredana Carnovale, M.D., D.D.S.) office next to the large courtyard at Navona Suites. Dennis was a great help in translations and in general knowledge of the area. Again, you felt like famiglia. The suite, my wife and I enjoyed, is called the Bernini Suite, the larger and more romantic of the two suites sharing the same kitchen. Extra clean, old world comfort with modern amenities, and a kitchen, complete with a stocked refrigerator and a deluxe, easy to use, espresso/cappuccino machine. There are two suites that share the same kitchen, so a family of four would have complete privacy in the entire flat. My wife and I only saw the other suites occupants twice during our stay, so the kitchen was like our own. We will return and highly recommend this most delightful accommodation. The Navona Gallery Suites has a new suite called the Michelangelo Suite with two rooms. You won't be disappointed staying at the Navona Gallery Suites while in Roma.
Location, location, location. Quiet courtyard entry, next door to Mimi e Coco's, a bar/restaurant and only a one minute walk to the Piazza Navona. In Piazza Pasquino, only a few feet away are four or five restaurants to enjoy with lower prices than at the restaurants in Piazza Navona. Lovely, new bath for my single room by Lacristina Update, May 2009 A very good hotel for the price. Especially in winter. And especially if you ask for the Rick Steves' rate. This rate is usually from 10-40 euros less per day (for a single room). he Aberdeen is newly renovated throughout, nicely decorated, very clean. Helpful and friendly staff. Conveniently located - about a 10 minute walk to the train station. A safe location, too, as it is just across the street from the Ministry of Defense. They have individual heaters for the bathroom, which is nice on a cold morning. Don't expect a view, but otherwise, a nice hotel indeed. Highly recommended at these prices. So I stay here often when not renting an apartment. There is free internet and use of a computer if you don't want to bring yours. The twin room we stayed in during February 2006 had one of the smallest showers imaginable. Don't drop the soap! But it's probably wrong to complain when we paid only 71 euros per night for four nights for two people. Amazing! On the other hand, when I returned a week later in March, we opted for two single rooms, but we each got the use of a double each - and the showers in these rooms were larger. Prices were still very reasonable; only 64 euros per night per room. My only (minor) complaints were a slow running shower drain (this was in a single room in 2004) and terrible coffee at breakfast in the coffee urn. Actually, the coffee was a little better in 2006, but still nothing to write home about. Now I just ask for a cappucino from the breakfast staff, and it is quite good! They do offer delicious cornetti (Italian croissants) and panini (small fresh bread rolls) as well as cheese, some kind of ham/sandwich meat (which I didn't think much of), juices, cereal, milk, yogurt. In all, a fine breakfast at these prices.
They have special rates for readers of Rick Steves' book. Ask about a Rick Steves' discount, or on the website, look for "Rick Steves Guest Reservations."
