Hello
I need some help I am taking my girlfriend to Rome for valentines day and we are staying at the savoy. I am going to prpose to her but ned to know where the best place is to do this and where I could take her for a nice meal before hand.
If anyone can help that would be great
Try the Ad Hoc restaurant, a romantic place in Via di Ripetta, the heart of Rome: kitchen special is fresh fish and a tasty Valentine's menu is available on the website:

Ciao! My favorite romantic restaurant in Rome is Hosteria Costanza, not far from Campo de' Fiori. It is moderately priced, and has very good food and service. See my review here with address and phone number: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/67a55/23513/2/?o=1
Then for an outdoor place to propose, I might suggest walking over (1 kilometer, less than 15 minutes)or taking a cab to the Piazza Campidoglio or Capitoline Hill. Facing the statue of Marcus Aurelius, walk straight ahead toward the Palazzo Senatorio (with the fountain). Walk around the Palazzo, to the right (or the left), to a fabulous view of the Roman Forum which is usually lit at night. Very romantic!
Ciao, Cristina... a fra poco!
Well, if you do not fear the crodws of VTers ( read here http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-457865-1-1-Travel-0-0-Rome-discussion.html ) i agree, Costanza could be a perfect place.
Historic and cozy place, with good food.
Ciao
Francesco
Imago at the Hotel Hassler, located at the top of the Spanish Steps is very romantic and the views spectalcular. In fact, it is where I went after my wedding in Rome. There are a couple of restaurants to choose from at this location (www.hotelhassler.com).

A rather unusual place which offers delicious Russian tea and food in delicately decorated rooms, right in the heart of Rome, in the old ghetto near Palazzo Costaguti.

Since we visited in March, it got dark quite early. This way we could explore "Rome by Night" quite easily!
We walked the same areas as during the days and enjoyed the atmosphere with those sights illuminated.
Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Castel Sant'Angelo or the Vatican really do look wonderful days and nights!
This was was quite a nice little meal, but not what I had expected. It's a little covered boat (so you're not at the mercy of the elements), which only seats about 30 people. So it's a cosy little environment.
They did a nice thing when we went on. When you book you have to state your nationality (I put New Zealand - for some reason I couldn't find British or Engish or UK!!!) And when we got there we found that they had made a point of seating us next to an Australian couple - which was nice to meet someone who spoke English and have a chat with them.
The staff are very freindly and courteous.
The only thing that let it down really was the river itself. There's not a lot to see as it's banked by huge stone walls. In fact, it goes a short way up the river, turns around again and goes back past the port, and on further down the river. When it turned we all started joking about how quick the cruise was - wasn't sure if it was the end or not!
it wasn't particularly romantic, though it was predominantly couples.
All in all, it was a nice meal, but nothing to absolutely rave about.
It was 53 Euros each, and only runs Thurs, Fri and Saturday nights. We booked online, but I think you could go down to the port and book earlier in the day as they have an office there as well.
You get back to dock at 11:15pm so you will need to get a taxi. We had to walk back up to St Peters to find a taxi rank. It was a set menu of "traditional" food, so there was a lot of pasta! When you are seated, a small plate of hor'd'vours greets you - triangles of sliced white bread with caviar, and pate piped onto it. You are given compliementary water and glass of bubbly. However, the rest of your drinks must be paid for. Wine is by the bottle and the cheapest is 20 Euro.
Next course was pasta with courgette. Then pasta with prawns and spicy sauce. Then there was veal with cold green beans and a lovely sauce. (the cold beans was odd, but tasty - a contrast with the warn veal). Then a gorgeous chocolate tart.
You could then have coffee or apperitiffe but you had to pay for this as well.
I nopticed that one couple had a different menu to us, so I assume if you are vegetarian or have dietary requirements, they can cater for this if you ask in advance. It was also someone's birthday, and they received a cake with a candle!
I can't recommend anything about the traveling and train...I took a cab to the airport and it worked fine....
but you asked about sites. and restaurants.
I will offer advice - from an artist perspective, or an appreciator....Ultimately we all will be on the same quest..... I treat Rome like Chelsea or the old days in Soho wandering and sticking my head in to galleries as I passed by each one and then another. Have a destination,or not, but be open. It take two seconds to walk into a church..Remeber to look up! (lol) At night see the Fountains, the exterior of the Pantheon was the coolest surprise in the rain at night.... Wander the streets... I don't sleep, I pinch myself everyso often to remind myself that," Jeez, I'm in ROME!) sleep on the plane!
Walk and wander..... Get an art book or google ( maybe on Bernini, Caravaggio, Baroque) on Rome and note where the great masterpieces are... decide what you really want to see and the journey there, if it is not too off the beaten track, The wlak will lead you past everything and more surprises.
Chiasa Minervea is around the corner from the Pantheon. Somebody mentioned the Gesu... But as you go treat Rome as if your window shopping, poke your head into the churches you pass. You will be pleasantly surprised, See the Dying Gaul in the Musei Capitolini. I love the view of the forum from above better then anywhere. I think it is an adventure to pass this spot at all times of day...and bring your camera. I ran by at dawn, saw the sunset later that day and everytime I could....wow..thrilling . Walk up the spanish steps at sundown and stroll that street whatever it's called. It ends up at piazza del Popolo . See the Caravaggio in the church of the same name,I believe- Santa Maria del Popolo. Google Caravaggio and Bernini. Map it out and they will lead you everywhere and to everything.... Food- I treat that as a quest as well. Read up to find what is Roman about Roman food and wine. As if I'm again in NYC ,looking for the bestest cheapest mealest I can findest!....As in the best burger! Or Chinese food up town! ugh no way! GO to Chinatown! But back to Rome! Ask someone, AN ITALIAN. in italian! Look it up. Where do they suggest you eat- "Scusimi, nomolto euro, no tourita, someplace that they like." They will most likely walk you to a great cheap pizza place that you will not forget!!!!!!.. I love Roma... I will go on if you want but forgive my spelling. My Italian is as bad as my english and is mixed with equally horrendous Spanish but it serves me well..... don't be afraid to try. A must!
