Civitavecchi to Fiumicino Ship or Direct Train?

by ProfBob

We will be completing a cruise in October. Not enough time to get from Cruise ship to airport and will be staying the airport area in Fiumicino city overnight before departure next morning from Fiumicino Airport. Question: Are there ships from Civitavecchia Harbor to Fiumicino Harbor or a direct train between the two locations. Looks like if by train, one will need to travel to Rome from the harbor and then back out again to the airport. Any observations will be appreciated. Taxi's look pricey. Thanks ...

If you want to get from Civitavecchia to Fiumicino airport by train then yes, I think you must go into Rome and out again. I'm not aware of any ferries between the two places (may be wrong).

http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.html

will give you train times, details and fares in English. Train will be by far the cheapest option.

It's around 66km from Civitavecchia to Fiumicino, so taxis/transfers will not be cheap. There are plenty of transfer firms if you google 'civitavecchia fiumicino transfer'.

But you could perhaps stay in Rome for a night instead? It is a very quick (31 minute) train journey from Termini station direct to the airport (train stops within the airport itself) and there are lots of hotels around Termini. Taxis to the airport from hotels within the city walls have a set fare too..think it's around 45 euro, but may be wrong.

There is a more complicated solution which would save you a few euro.

You could catch the train to Trastevere from Fuimicino and pick up the Civitavecchia train there. It costs 5 euro to get to Trastevere against 11 plus euro on the Leonardo express to termini.

However it is a bit of a hassle to save a few euro.

If you catch a taxi into Rome city - check with the driver first if he will charge you the standard rate (about 40 euro) to a hotel within the aurelian walls (any hotel near Termini will be) if he is a Fuimicino based driver he doesn't have to do this

but i do think you best bet is to catch the leonardo express into termini - stay at any of the hotels near there - then troll out to Civitavecchia the next morning.

oh mercy i should have read your question properly - I have got it all the wrong way round

we usually get questions from people wanting to get to Civitavecchia and I jumped to conclusions.

But my answer all applies - just back to front.

Again - you can get off at Trastevere and get the cheaper 5 euro ticket out to Fuimicino.

You can buy both tickets at the start of your journey.

Travel Tips for Rome

The Steps

by Pawtuxet

The history and story of the Spanish Steps was lost to me when I saw these women do their little performance. Maybe you will be lucky enough to see something going on there when you visit. It's a great spot to do some people watching, post card stand near by and a natural photo op.

Packing List

by KiwiRob

A secure one, don't let it out of your site. In summer it's hot, sandals are a must, shorts, t-shirts etc....try not to look too much like a tourist if you can help it. I carry an SLR, several lens and a large flash. But you could get away with a nice compact camera. I had no problem finding film and APS film is easily found. I would also take a polarising filter along to cut out the glare and bring out some colour in the sky.

Wine, Bread, Cheese and Locals

by wfrankrn about Vinoteca Novecento

This place is about two block from the Pantheon. My partner and I love wine and this place was one of the best and most reasonable places we stumbled on to. House wines, bread, cheese and yes, mortedella!

A great cafe: Antico Caffe Della Pace

by Erin74 about Antico Caffe Della Pace

Antico Caffe della Pace is a lovely cafe very near Piazza Navona. Located on a narrow but colorful side street, it's a great place to have a leisurely lunch and watch the people stroll by. We sat at the outdoor patio for the best view. I've heard this restaurant described as upscale, but at lunchtime it's a casual environment. We thought that this was one of the most charming and memorable places that we ate while in Rome. I loved the ham & mozzarella panini. The salads here were also wonderful!
