Hotel Okay - Rome town of pickpockets & ripoffs
Just returned from attending a conference in Rome and spending a week at the Universo-Rome. Hotel Okay-- rooms & bath modern Italian design, very little storage room in closet & drawers, pretty clean, AC worked fine, staff friendly. Breakfast minimal okay to get you started-- juices, canned fruit, push-button coffee/cuppuccino machine, yogurts, croissants, ham & cheese uncovered- flys, cereals. I feel the hotel is quite over-priced and certainly not a 4-star. Yes, hotel is very conveniently located to the Opera house and train/metro station. Not a big deal since Metro coverage in Rome is limited (only 2 lines and can board at any Metro stop), could be convenient if you are traveling through Italy by train. Not a great place for strolling around at night, if we visit Rome again we will probably stay in a hotel in the Pantheon District close to Pizza Navona. If you want to stay at a high-end hotel, stay on Via Veneto! BEWARE PICKPOCKETS & RIPOFFS: in the small group of people we knew at the conference, 3 people were victims of aggressive/violent pickpockets 2 on the metro and 1 shopping. Two of them will attack you, unzip your packpack and throw all your items on the floor of the metro and grab what they can! Check the meter on the cab when you get in to be sure they don't already have 10-euros on the meter when you sit down! My wife and I do not have any desire to return to Italy, until the Italian authorities take steps to prevent attacks on tourists and ripoffs! Spend your travel dollars in another country!
Stayed here on our first trip ever to Rome from June 17-21, 2005. We had two adults and one 11 year old girl with us in a room that had one king and one double bed in one over-sized room. Bathroom was large with a separate room for shower, toilet and bidet. There was a large selection of very fancy shampoos, soaps, creams, much more than we could use. Room was very comfortable, very clean and very quiet. We never heard a peep from street noise or from other guests. Room also had a nice refrigerator for drinks. Overall very nice for about 120 euros per night, pre-paid on the internet through Best Western's web site.
Breakfast was included and was nice although not spectacular. Juices, coffee, pastries, eggs, cold cuts, certainly enough for us. Service in the dining room was very good.
Front desk folks were very friendly and helpful. Location is pretty good as it's close by the train station and within walking distance of cafes, Mc Donald's, etc. Overall, I was very pleased and would stay again.
Uncomfortable , dreary hotel.
We stayed at the Universo having been transferred by the staff at the Hotel Ripa in Trasteverra who had refused to honour our booking. We had avoided booking in this area as we had been advised that it was not very nice. We had already witnessed a mugging at the Station as we arrived from the airport so were not best pleased to find ourselves back in the area having been bumped by the Hotel Ripa. Anyway , the room itself looked ok , the bathroom was clean and modern. Unfortunately the mattress on the bed appeared to be made of concrete and the whole of the window was obscured by a rather unattractive air conditioning duct. There was no natural light coming in at all and in the end we closed the curtains to avoid the depressing view. . The breakfast room was horrible, dark and depressing. Sticky tables, dirty glass wear , strange tasting orange juice and disgusting coffee from a machine. We went elsewhere for breakfast for the next two days even though we had paid for breakfast with our room rate. Luckily Rome is so fantastic that even our bad Hotel experiences could not stop us having a wonderful time.
Nice Hotel but staff .......
Loved the room and location but staff were terrible.
The rooms were well appointed, nicely lit, clean. The Bathrooms were beautifully tiled in Granite with classy modern fittings and shower.
The Reception Staff however were terrible all bar one. They would do anything asked
of them but it was clear that they did not want to do it. They were mostly
quite rude and unhelpful, often walking away from you after a request,
leaving you wondering whether request was being handled or ignored.
The Breakfast was poor with little choice of cereal, hot food or breads and
dining room staff equally unhelpful and abrupt.
Only met one member of bar staff and seemed to be the same as the rest,
surly and poured a beer into a wet glass from the draining board at the sink.
Hotel Rooms Lovely, shame about staff
Was very happy with rooms, very modern decor with beautiful lighting. Perfect location for touring Rome - Took 101 hop on/ hope off bus from Termini Station which is very close by. The only bad comment to make would be the staff. We waited so long to get checked in. We seemed to be passed from person to person with nobody wanting to check us in. All had sour faces and clearly did not like their jobs. The manager, i could see, was trying to get them moving but nothing worked. A lovely man worked behind reception in the evening and was very helpful and pleasant but other than that, they all left you feeling as though you were disturbing them, not the way a receptionist should act, regardless of language difficulties. Breakfast was miserable and i always had to sit at a dirty table. There was staff there but they seemed to spend most of the time fixing the coffee machine than clearing the tables.
Perfect location for touring, very close to the Termini train station.
Small room and bathroom, but very clean and modern. Spotless bathroom towels and linen.
The breakfast was fine, but not the meals, and to my surprise the waiters just grab your plate before you've finished trying to eat the tasteless food they serve you.
The staff seems depressed. They ignore the customers most of the time and have very glum faces, like if their pay was overdue.
Not THAT bad, but does not deserve a **** rating.
"It's Italy. Be a Roman "
Always be a good traveler and not a tourist. Overall the hotel met my expectations but I did not expect much. The room was clean, remodeled, and kind of enjoyable. After the second night of walking down stairs from the loft to go to the bathroom I quickly knew I didn't like this so depending on your mobility you might want to avoid this type of room. We did ask for a King size bed so my wife and I could sleep together but we got two twins instead. Asking for stuff in Italy was kind of like being in the military. You get what they give you and like it. Every day I would push them together and every day they would separate them. We ran out of tissue and it only took two days to get another box. Not complaining simply stating a fact. I laughed when I ran out of body wash and instead of getting new the hotel simply put tap water in the existing bottles and shook them. This was a rather unusual practice for any country. The last two days of our stay we didn't have soap. The last three days we didn't have shampoo. We had our own from America. :-)) The last few days we didn't have scrambled eggs either...not sure why not.
Can't say I'm disappointed but I would choose another hotel the next visit to compare to this one. I give the hotel a 3 star maximum rating with 2 star for service. Just not a four star establishment yet but they seem to be trying.
after reading the reviews i was afraid arriving at this hotel. No problems at all. Hotel was big, airy, well lit..breakfast area was bright (far from dark and dreary) and rooms were nice, big enough and modern. Very clean also which is very important. Staff were very nice..not quiet sure what all the moaning was about in previous reviews. I would stay here again and recommend it to anyone. Nice and central also and a stones throw from the central station and loads of nice restaurants nearby!
Will be traveling to rome in January and staying at the Hotel Universo. Any info on the hotel and any near by resturants would be greatly welcomed. Thanks

If you've got the address of your hotel, put it in www.viamichelin.com (in the form at the top) and click the restaurant option. You'll get a map with nearby restaurants, with descriptions, addresses and price range.
