boat tour of Rome

by KEH

I was looking for some information on the Compagnia di Navigazione Ponte San Angelo boat tour. I was thinking of taking the hop on hop off tour but wondering if it would be worth it because it appears that you cannot see that much of Rome from the Tiber due to the high banks. Anyone ever taken this tour and if so what did you think of it?
Thanks for all your advice.

I forgot to add that we would be in Paris as well as Rome. If there are any Paris experts maybe you could share what you think of a cruise down the Seine instead. I don't want to go on two boat tours. Would you recommend one tour over another.
Thanks again.

Re: boat tour of Rome

I have not taken this tour but I do know Rome quite well....and I would not consider a boat tour in terms of seeing the city. Both the major Roman remains and the Vatican area are well set back from the river banks, for very obvious reasons.

Much better to walk/use buses, trams and Metro, imo.

But if you just fancy pootling down the river then why not.

They have cruises as well as 'hop-on, hop-off' services but........

according to the Batteli di Roma site (who operate the tour you mention) all boats have stopped because of the floods in December:

Hello,

I would have to second Leics on this. It is not a good way to see Rome. If you just want to relax on a river cruise, this may be the way to go but as a sightseeing cruise, you won't see much of anything.

I'll pile on... do not take the boat tour. The Tevere (Tiber) was enclosed with embankments (beginning in 1870) to keep it from flooding; as a result the river is well below (over 200 feet), and divorced from, the city. Buy daily, weekly, or special tourist RomaPass metro/bus tickets, and hop on and off the dense web of public transportation. Dianne

Travel Tips for Rome

go to S. Pietro in...

by zys1

go to S. Pietro in Vaticano.

S. Pietro in Vaticano is the most imposing basilica of all Christianity, and it is the heart of the Catholic world. One certainly does not have to be Catholic to enjoy this breathtaking basilica. St. Peter's is built over the tomb of St. Peter, and was erected by Constantine shortly after 320 A.D. Fearing it would collapse, Nicholas V commissioned B. Rossellino to rebuild it in 1452. But, the construction was not begun until 1506 under Julius II to a Bramante design, who intended to 'raise the Pantheon above the Basilica of Maxentius'. After him, the works were directed alternately by Giuliano da Sangallo, Raphael, B. Peruzzi and A. da Sangallo the Younger, until Michelangelo took over in 1546 and gave the unmistakable imprint of his genius to this awesome building. He built the building in the form of a Greek cross surmounted by the majestic famed cupola. On his death in 1564, the work, already well advanced, was continued by Pierro Ligorio, Vignola, Giacomo della Porta, and D. Fontana. At the wish of Paul V, C. Maderno later transformed the shape from that of a Greek cross to that of a Latin cross, which lengthened the front wing and added the facade. On November 18, 1626, Urban VIII consecrated the new basilica.
The face, preceded by a wide flight of steps in three tiers, with the huge statues of St. Peter and St. Paul at the sides, is gigantic (125 yards long by 50 yards high) with eight colossal columns and four pilasters supporting the trabeation crowned by a balustraded attic, above which the statues of Christ, the Baptist, and the Apostles (except St. Peter) of the Bernini school, and two clocks, stand out.

A.S. Roma

by OttoMarzo

A.S. Roma is the most important soccer team of Rome. It has more than 2 millions supporters in Italy and its most representative player is Francesco Totti. They play every other week-end (Italian Serie A matches) at the Olympic Stadium of Rome and during the week (European Cups matches) from late August to late May.
To go and watch these matches its an incredible event, wether you are an A.S. Roma supporter or not. Its supporters are super hot and funny. To go watch games you have to go to the Olympic Stadium and you should buy tickets (online also) with a good advance. Costs between 10 and 200 Euros. You can buy scarfs or t-shirts or flags everywhere. It's a safe place, but 80.000+ people go to matches everytime, so, just don't bring a fortune with you!

Dancing in Style

by rfilios about Art Cafe

Very chic, very stylish - get on the list if you can cause this is one hard club to get into, even if you are on the list! If you are an exceptionally good looking female and get the right person's attention, you may be given a lifetime VIP card that gets you right in all the time with no waiting and free drinks - good luck though, i have only see one girl do it!

The best way is to book a table - its more enjoyable anyway and worth the extra cash as you get bottle service and a fruit plate. Save your appetite though - around 3 am they serve pasta at the bar! Dress very chic Italian - don't look like a tourist - they are super snobby about that.

Best food in Rome! Santo Padre

by jenn5179 about Santo Padre

Family owned and operated - grandpa cooks, grandma does dishes (you will walk right by her at the sink if you use the restroom!), daughters and grandaughters handle the tables

Only a couple speak any english, but that was not a problem....

We were sent there by a recommendation of a friend, and we have continued to recommend it to others since then. Everything we ate was incredible, I had a pasta dish, my husband had meat (ossobucco, I believe). It was over a year ago, so I apologize for being vague, but really, its wonderful
