parking in rome

by ade78

Hi, we're planning to visit Rome in January, and as we're planning to make a couple of stops along the way, we have to travel by car. I'm aware of the dangers of driving in Rome, so we were thinking of finding a parking lot where we could live the car for a couple of days...does anyone know about a similar place?
thx,adela

If you go to routeplanner www.viamichelin.com and put in Rome, you get a map. Zoom in to the map and click the blue 'P' icon that's on the map. Then you get all parking spaces in Rome or whatever neighbourhood you're in.
I suggest zooming in to your hotel address and find the parking spaces around there.

I live in Boston, but take small groups to Italy for cooking holidays. I met Maurizio (mbtours@hotmail.com)about 4 years agao in Rome and he's been my "private driver" not only for my groups, but for my husband and I personally. He has his own 9 passenger mercedes. The reason why I'm telling you this, is because it's rare to find such a gem. Who is honest, caring and helpful. I bet he'll know where you can leave your car for a few days (safely) if your hotel can't. He just visited and stayed with us,last week here in Boston. We needed a cab to get around town and even though I live here, we got taken! Just like most (not all) cabbies in Rome... In the long run your better off using a private driver that has been recommended! Tell him Shelly sent you :)Good Luck.

Travel Tips for Rome

Language

by deebum25

I cannot say or emphasize it enough if you are going to Italy please please PLEASE learn at least enough of the language to communicate! I studied for 6 months before our trip so I was not fluent but it made for a wonderful experience to be able to communicate. Some of the worst behavior I have ever seen was from frustrated American tourists who fully arrogantly expected the Italians to speak flawless English while they themselves did not bother to learn a word of Italian. I have found that if you show the respect of at least trying to speak the language, no matter how badly mangled you will receive a warmer reception than those red in the face who think that yelling is going to get their point across. Remember we're visiting their country, why not learn a little bit before you go? That said, in the cities English is more prevalent but where we liked to eat in the family run trattorias the only English you would hear was, "No speak English!"

Museo Nazionale delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari

by icunme

I would never have seen this extraordinary Museum if it were not for the elaborate Danze Storica (working on that tip also) that was held there last Sunday (Feb 8, 2009). Traditional art from various regions - an outstanding carved gondola with leather seats and a privacy hood for those notables (second floor). This museum give you a feeling of the traditional art of the people of the regions from Sicily to Venice - carvings - painted carts of Sicily (first floor) - ceramics (second floor) and don't miss the puppet display (second floor). It is off-the-beaten path but right there in central EUR with ample parking in front. Well worth a trip!

don't arrive at night

by swinny

If you can help it, unless your hotel is right next to the airport, don't arrive in Rome at night. The reason for this is that the metro stops running at 11:30 pm. Taking a taxi from the airport to central Rome can cost upwards of 150 Euro. I understand there is a bus you can take, but I have no information on it and I wouldn't want to take a Rome bus in any case with luggage. If you don't have some euros with you when you arrive, you'll need to exchange some at the airport. The metro train will cost you 10 Euro per person to take to Rome Termini station.

Too overpriced

by HELEN about Michele Di Rienzo

This restaurant is located in the Pantheon piazza. Lot's of people hang out here at night. So the atmosphere is great. There are always street musicians and entertainers who are fun to watch and lots of people hanging out. So the atmosphere is great. The food at this place was good but way overpriced. They didn't offer house wine, and the cheapest bottle of wine was 20 euro. Not worth it.

Hustle and bustle - heart of a city

by Fizzyblond

Take a walk around the Piazza Navona and enjoy the small side streets and browse amongst classy but expensive souvenirs!

The restaurants and cafes are wonderful but remember you can get a free seat at any of the fountain edges! Watch the world go by. Watch the mime artists intensely - they are so goooood! I couldnt see a flicker!

Oh yes, and check out the artist's market on Wednesdays when they fill the square with colour and banter, and end up with your very own Roman "original"!! Or draw one yourself!
