Pay-as-You-go Cellphone/Mobile in Italy

by zinx

Hi,

We are planning 1 week trip to see various places in Italy.

While there I would like to get a pay-as-you-go phone so as to avoid roaming charges for incoming calls.

Please could you guide me on how easy or difficult is it to get a PAYG sim in Italy and where we can get one.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Should you want to avoid roaming charges while in Italy, I'm only aware of two ways.
1. Phone rental. You can search for details as I had read somewhere that it's possible in some places.
2. Pay-as-you-go are called "ricaricabile". Most operators, at least TIM and Vodafone for sure, have this option and you would need to activate a new SIM card for it. Not sure if something has now changed, but for security reasons such contracts could not be accessed by foreigners in the past - except for foreign residents. For this reason, I had put a couple of such contracts on my name for foreign colleagues who visited here frequently. If this is still valid, you should rely on locals who could help you in this way.

Thanks for your quick reply.

It does seem its not possible for outsider to get a mobile phone, as specified on vodafone site on documents needed.

"Visit your local Vodafone Store with a valid ID, a legal Italian domicile and your fiscal code card (obtainable by presenting a valid passport or residence permit to the local authorities). "

A couple of days ago I was helping a friend get a prepaid SIM card from Wind and they asked for a passport/ID and a tax code (codice fiscale). When she said she still did not have it, they said that it's OK and that they will calculate it manually. They did not ask for the tax code document that one gets at registration with the municipality. So I guess it depends on the guys at the mobile operator outlets.

Good luck.

Despite code generators, which are available on-line, a valid "codice fiscale" pertains to residents in Italy. I guess foreigners must therefore show a valid visa ("permesso di soggiorno") in order to obtain - or generate - such code.
I think there's no way to get a pay-as-you-go contract regardless of the operator or its agencies.

Travel Tips for Rome

Gardens of Palazzo Borghese

by alza

The Palazzo Borghese was built to celebrate the power and glory of the papacy in the heart of Old Rome. Its design if called cembalo because it resembles a grand piano.

I took these photos a long time ago, I've forgotten the Palazzo but not the Gardens and the old books and prints along largo Fontanella di Borghese. That time in Rome, I met an American called Bruce at Piazza di Spagna and we spent the afternoon walking around the gardens. There was a dog show, as you can see.

Crossing the road

by illumina

I know everyone has said it before, but it's true - if you want to cross the road in Rome, you pretty much have to ignore the cars, and just step out. If you don't look at them, they will stop. I'd say it's best to peek out of the corner of your eye; if there's something coming at 70 miles an hour, it's probably best not to step out right in front of it! (there's usually so much traffic that there aren't many places the cars are that fast). Cars actually aren't so bad, it was the scooters that we found the most dangerous - as soon as you're out of their direct line, they'll whizz around behind you, missing you by inches.

FCO Airport.!

by siso010

Once you get off your flight and took you luggage just go out the airport you will find a tunnel like a bridge pass it from inside so you are in the train station.!
take the train it will get you off in Termini station "The main station".
it costs 9 euros for the trip and it takes 35 minutes to arrive to Termini.
there is a train getting off every 30 min.

Pasta Plenty

by sandysmith about Osteria Rugantino

The first pasta course dishes were the more plentiful. The mushroom canneloni, seafood lasange and various other pastas were all tasty and hot. There was set menu choice for meat dishes - I had steak one night and buffalo tail stew another - and also a seafood menu - for example pasta with shrimp and lemon, as well as a la carte choices. All looked (I always love to see what other people are eating too!) tasty and plentiful. It went down very well with the local house red which was a chianti.
