4 or 5 days?

by Lauramcg

Hi

I'm planning to visit Rome at the end of August and can't decide whether to stay for 4 or 5 nights. I need to book flights asap so would be grateful for some feedback on this. Is 5 days too long for one city or is there easily enough to see in 5 days?

Also, one of the hotels we're looking at is called the Condotti Palace hotel - apparently quite nice and central without being too noisy. Has anyone stayed there / got any opinions about it? The other possibility is the Hotel Diplomatic which has also received some good reviews.

Finally, what will the weather be like in the last week in August? I'm not sure whether I'll still need to pack sunscreen or should I be bringing a jacket instead???

Thanks in advance for your help!

L

I was there last week and it was very hot!
Be warned, part of the vatican was closed over the weekend from 1.00pm onwards so make sure you see it sooner rather than later.
We stayed at the cosmopolita hotel and it was very central and had a balcony which was nice and only a 2 min walk from the trevi fountain.
Have a lovely time and make sure you have an ice cream or ten!

As Melissa says, there will be plenty to keep you busy for 5 days. As she says, note that in August, the Romans themselves (like the Pope) often commute out to the towns in the surrounding hills - Tivoli (Hadrian's Villa), Frascati, Castel Gandolfo, etc. Many of these places are easily reached by commuter train from Stazione Termini. The train to Frascati has the bonus of running alongside one of the aqueducts for quite a distance.

As noted, it will be hot in Rome. The Romans have some air-conditioning, but it's usually not strong enough to really deal with the afternoon heat. Even though I am from Texas (and therefore should be used to the heat), I found myself changing shirts extra often in July.

Buon viaggio!

Bill is right about the heat. Try to see outdoor things early in the day, to avoid the worst of the heat. Many of the new trams have excellent air conditioning, so use them to get around when you're not walking.

Hi, first of all Rome in August will be very hot! It gets quite hot beginning in June.

Check tripadvisor.com for a few comments about the Condotti Palace hotel. They are not too favorable unfortunately. I'm not familiar with Hotel Diplomatic but it's gotten quite good reviews on tripadvisor.com.
It appears from description to be very near to the Spanish Steps so location is pretty good.

Actually 5 days is NOT enough for Rome in my opinion. I can easily spend 5 months in Rome and still have things to see and experience.

Have a great visit!

Hello

Thanks for all of your responses! Needless to say we've ended up booking 5 days in Rome and are staying at the Hotel Diplomatic.

I'll also be packing lots of suncream but am looking forward to it already!

Thanks
