Good inexpensive hostel

by oslocairo

Hi!

I'm looking for a good, but inexpensive hostel that is close to the center of Rome.

Thanks

My favorite inexpensive, yet quite nice hotel in rome is the Hotel Aberdeen (yes a strange name for a hotel in Rome.) Ask for the Rick Steves rate. Rick Steves is a USA travel writer.

You can read my review and contact info here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/67a55/23513/3/

I have staye there many times. I have just booked a single in high season (i.e. May) for only 92E. That's really a great price for a hotel in the historical center.

They have completely renovated the hotel in the past 3 years. Some of the showers are small, but it is a very good deal in a very exepnsive city.

Thanks LaCristina. I have just found a hostel, but that sounds like a good one, especially for location.

Travel Tips for Rome

People watching

by Jenniflower

Even though it was raining, people still come out in their hoardes, onto the streets and into the piazzas.

They still sit on the same bench and feed the same birds, the only difference being, that this time they have their raincoat with them!

I find this quite fascinating... they watch the people and the people watch them.

A lovely bit of Italian culture.

Almost saying 'stop rushing aorund and take in your surroundings!'.

Lovely.

Lighthouse of Janiculum

by sandysmith

This light house on Monte Gianicolo was a gift to Rome in 1911 by the Italians from Argentina and it is a work of Manfredo Manfredi.
It is just a short stroll from Piazza Garibaldi.
If you don't want to walk up the hill in the heat then take bus 780. You will also be rewarded with wonderful views over Rome from up here. Many thanks to VT'er Piccolina for directing me to this place :-))

Metrebus Roma Tickets - Validation.

by breughel

You know that your Metro bus ticket BIT has to be validated when starting the journey. This is a must. But what if the validating machine "obliteratrice" doesn't work?
First try another one, but it can happen that all machines of a station are "fuori servizi" don't work. During all February 2008 the six machines at the urban railway station Gemelli (deserving the major Roman hospital) were out of service!

What to do? Don't think it is not your problem. On your ticket is written, only in Italian, in very small characters, that you have to validate your ticket by writing on it datum, time, station "In caso di malfunzionamento dell'obliteratrice il viaggiatore dovra annulare il titolo di viaggio apponendovi la data, l'ora ed il numero di vettura o la stazione sul retro".
Do that, at Gemelli station (urban train line FM3) I had just hand filled in my BIT ticket that there was a control on the train.

Another thing; when validating your ticket in a machine turn the illustrated side down. The machine prints on the upper side.

Pizza galore!!!

by tvdm

Wherever you walk in this city, you will find many small pizzerie, where you buy a slice of pizza for anything between EUR2 or 3. They're always fresh and delicious and it's certainly healthier than a quick bite at McDonald's or whatever. It saves you the trouble of having to sit down for a meal but if you want to do that, there's no shortage of fine restaurants either!

Castel St. Angelo

by engeluna

This castle is a most interesting side trip right outside the Vatican. It was only around 5 Euro to get in but the views alone were worth it. Facinating art work housed inside. But my favorite part was the mini bridge inside.
