Not a Category 5 Hotel!
The Marriott website stated it was a Category 5 hotel. The room we received was not from a category 5 hotel, I do not believe it would even be a category 2 hotel. The front desk was woefully understaffed, due to the long line in took almost 30 minutes to checkout. The elevators were slow and rickety, and the non-smoking floor smelled like smoke. The hallway ceiling was stained and brown and the hall and lobby walls were filthy.
Our room wasn't any better. I have never stayed in a more disgusting room. The ceiling was stained and the walls actually had large patches of paint peeling off them. We asked to be moved to a different room. Our new room still had large brown stains on the ceiling, dirty walls, mold in the bathroom and the trim was falling off the walls. I have never seen anything like it. I am not sure if all the room are as bad as the ones we were given but I would not roll the dice to find out,
I have been a loyal Marriott customer for years but I am quite disappointed in our stay at the Marriott Courtyard Rome Airport Hotel. I have always trusted Marriott to keep certain standards and I believe this hotel falls way below those standards.
We will be flying from Catania into Fiumicino early evening and will only stay one night before our flight back to the States the next morning. We are looking for a nice area to stay near the airport ( about 10-15 minutes away)that also has nearby restuarants and places to walk around that evening. We really don't want to spend 35 minutes on a train going to Rome and then all the way back the next morning. And which would be better to get to our hotel from the airport..shuttle, Train or Taxi. BTW..we will be spending 5 nights in Rome prior to our trip to Sicily.
Thanks!

You might like to check this place out - the reviews overall are quite positive and the location sounds ideal.
Lucky you, going to Sicily! We loved it, though Catania Airport is an absolute bunfightto leave from (we arrived by train so can't comment on arrivals)! Leave yourselves PLENTY of time to check in and get through security.

www.venere.com is the best place to check for Rome accommodation. Its guest reviews are honest, and it's a reliable site.
You might consider staying at Ostia Lido, which is Rome's 'seaside'.
The best way to get to the airport will depend upon where you end up staying. I don't think you will find a train which does not require going into Rome and out again (I may be wrong about this). If there is a shuttle you could use that, otherwise a taxi is likely to be the easiest. Get the hotel to book it for you the night before.

Right in the town of Fiumicino is the Hotel Riviera. Clean and comfortable and near restaurants and shops. Has a fee shuttle to/from Airport. See there website at; http://www.hotelrivierafiumicino.it/home_en.htm

The hotels people mention are fine - for nighttime, I suggest the Guru Lounge.
Travel Tips for Rome
Ask for un Caffe
by nicolettart
You must have an espresso, but don't call it that when ordering. Un caffe (black) or un macchiato (with foamy milk). It's the best coffee and the cheapest, at around 70 cents! We had great coffee at Caffe Sant' Eustachio and a nutella-filled sfogliatella (you know, the clam-shell pastry).
St. Peter's Basilica
by Gypsystravels
St. Peter's Basilica
The largest, most famous and magnificant basilica in the world. Within it lie works of art (including Michaelangelo's 'Pieta') covering almost 2000 years of history. The Basilica was originally built where the Apostle Peter was believed to have been buried. The current Basilica was inaugurated in 1626 and only later the square in front was planned and completed with its colonnade by Berini.

Bring a good pair of walking shoes !!!!!
by jlanza29
Just as in Paris, and London, Rome is great on foot, the metro drops you off close to the major sites but a good amount of your time getting to places from the metro is on foot !!!! Be warned the walks are great but look down to make sure your foot doesn't get caught in between the crack of the 1,000 year old streets !!!!! Bring good shoes, if not you'll regret it !!!!!
Brunch in rome!
by rfilios about Coco
Looking for a cute brunch spot in an even cuter piazza? Look no further than Coco in Piazza delle Coppelle - a tiny gem of a piazza filled with the restaurants tables. Inside is a brunch buffet which is quite good. They serve mimosas and bellinis too! Price is good for the food and service.
