Great Piano Player
by TripAdvisor Member Celtictiger
We stayed in the Crowne Plaza St. Peters for 3 nights in January.
The Bar Staff and the Piano Player were excellent with Oysters and Champagne for 6 Euro between 6 and 7.30 pm. There is an excellent Leisure Centre and the Free schuttle bus to the vatican and town centre we also used it for our return to the airport. Happy to recommend it.
There is an excellent Italian restaurant at the entrance to the hotel.
Very reasonable by Irish standards.

My wife and I stayed at the Crowne Plaza Rome-St. Peter's for three days at the end of October, but, different from some other TripAdvisor reviewers, our experience with the hotel's staff could not have been much better. They were all courteous and helpful to us with information about the hotel and about touring Rome. The concierge was particularly kind in helping us to check on a reservation for a tour of the Vatican Scavi.
The room was pretty typical of Crowne Plazas worldwide. Ours was spacious, comfortable and clean, although the carpet was beginning to show a little wear. The indoor pool and exercise facilities were very nice, and the age limit for their use is clearly posted on the hotel's web site. The Avis car rental desk at the hotel is another good feature.
The free shuttle to the Vatican area and the airport is a wonderful service. However, it would be nice to have a "sign-up" sheet for their use. We waited approximately 20 minutes for the shuttle to the Vatican, only to find that we were too far back in line to get on the shuttle bus. The public bus has a stop in front of the hotel and only costs one euro, so had we known that the shuttle was full, we wouldn't have wasted time waiting on it. The public buses are also a convenient and relatively quick method of reaching good dining choices; the line's terminus is at a square across the river from Castel Sant' Angelo, within easy walking distance of many good eateries of every price range.
The 7:15 airport shuttle is probably very useful for many travelers, but a bit early for most flights to the U.S., and the 10:00 shuttle is too late. An 8:45 or 9:00 airport shuttle would be a great amenity for American travelers, who seemed to constitute a large percentage of the hotel's guests.
If the hotel staff have been rude in the past, they must have gotten the message about the guests' displeasure by the time we arrived, since they couldn't have been much nicer to us. Hopefully others will also find this to be the case in the future.
greatly disappointed

Our family's stay at this establishment and it fell far short of our expectations. The room was smelly and the bedspreads were old and wrinkled. There were no extra pillows or blankets and only one complimentary water for four of us. We chose this place for two reasons; one because it had a pool. Our children (who are on the swim team and excellent swimmers) were looking forward to a stay at a hotel with a swimming pool. imagine our disappointment to find out they could not use the indoor pool because they were younger than 16. How strange that they could use the outdoor pool...which was freezing, but not the indoor pool. Why is that? We also chose it because of the airport shuttle service. unfortuantely, the shuttle runs so infrequently that to leave at 7:15 AM for a flight that left at noon because there was no other shuttle that would get us there in time. We had recently stayed at the Hilton Hotel, Rome and enjoyed their lovely facilities and pool. When in Rome next time, we would not chose the Crowne Plaza. Also the Hilton upgraded us to a suite. We couldn't even receive acceptable service at your hotel. The Internet card we purchased for 5 Euro did not work and no one at the desk was willing to help us in a timely manner.
Bummer !

Started a tour here, which was supposed to be 3 star hotels all the way....if this is a 3 star hotel--I'm George Bush ! Hotel in need of major carpet, paint, new windows, doors, etc.... not close to any of "the sights" , no ice, thin towels, smelly old bedspreads....yuck ! Not the way to start a trip !
does the job

I would recommend staying here, but be warned it is a little out of town, a couple of bus journey's to get to where all the main touristy action points are.
The spa and gym is pretty good, didn't have the breakfast. rooms were large with balcony. I can see the outdoor swimming pool being great in the Summer. Probably the place could do with a bit of a refurb tho, if your impressed by contemporary surrondings, this isn't the place for you.
Finally the staff were all very helpful and made the stay a little bit better.
Above average European hotel
by TripAdvisor Member TravelerinTEXAS
Tours often begin here. It is not easy to get around Rome from here, but the hotel itself is above average for Europe. I often think bad reviews are expecting a Hilton deluxe, and , if so, they should stay in the States! This hotel has full American B. fast included, within walking to a bus and above average sized room and bath. Mini bar is stocked, and rooms are clean and quiet. Do not hesitate to stay here.

Crowne Plaza Hotel Rome?

Has anyone stayed in this hotel? They advertise free shuttle to city center and the airport. Just would like to hear anyone's experience first hand.
Thanks,
Patsy

Not in Rome, but if it's the Chain which I think it is you should get good quiality service and accomidations.
I've stayed at a few Crown Plazas in Europe for work and have always been very happy. Just posting this in case you don't get any fedback on the specific one in Rome.
Ciao

This hotel is in a strangely rural part of Rome, that is, there are trees here and some estate-like properties and the immediate area is not like the built up areas that normally come to mind. It's good that there is a shuttle, because you're not really close to anything touristy. However, the southern end of the Largo di Boccea area is only about 600 meters (1/3 mile) up the road, and this area has plenty of "local" shopping (department stores, grocery stores, barbershops, clothing stores, etc.). Hmmmn, I remember that there was a restaraunt here that was the first place in Rome in which we were ever served ice water (with ice!) at the table - we were quite shocked ;-). Yes, it was a while ago...
Just north and east of the Largo di Boccea area are 2 Metro stops (Cornelia and Baldo degli Ubaldi), maybe a little more than a kilometer away. And there are plenty of buses running about and down the streets through this area.
Note that this hotel is easy to get to and from Fiumicino airport, since a taxi or limo just drives around the ringroad and takes Via Aurelia in. Actually, the last time I was there, I rented a car and stayed at an apartment complex with offstreet parking about 1.5 kilometers east of here (i.e., closer in to town), and had no problem driving in to and out from this location, because of the Via Aurelia....OK, and the fact that I had lived long ago on this side of town so I knew it ;-)

In response to the gentleman with the excellent information on this hotel, is it within walking distance to the Vatican?

It's about 3.5 kilometers (a little more than 2 miles), so it's a long walk. One problem is that this location is to the west of Vatican City while the entrance to St. Peter's is on the east side, and (just as bad) the entrance to the Museums is on the north side. I imagine that you would want to walk up to Largo di Boccea (or at least southern end where (eventually) Via Gregorio Settimo leads off to the south side of the Vatican), and take a bus. The Metro would also work.

Thank-you that was very helpful. Even though we enjoy walking, I would like have some energy left to see the sights
