Beautiful hotel in the best neighbourhood in Rome
by A TripAdvisor Member
I recently enjoyed a stay at the Hotel dei Consoli.
The hotel is well located in a quiet, upscale residential neighbourhood a few minutes walk from the Vatican. It's an easy and pleasant 15 minute walk to the Piazza del Popolo and about 20 minutes to the Piazza di Spagna. I particulary enjoy staying in this area of Rome as it's away from the noise and crowds of the centro storico, but still within walking distance. The nearest metro at Ottaviano is 4 blocks away.
I had one of the "deluxe" rooms. It was a moderate size and spotlessly clean. The decor was in a lovely conservative, traditional Roman style.
The staff were friendly and helpful, with the exception of one cold and clueless woman who was often on the front desk. One morning she informed me that the buses and metro weren't running due to a strike. I promptly walked around the corner and caught the bus. She was incapable of something as simple as booking me a taxi the morning I left. This, however, is a minor complaint as the rest of the staff more than made up for one person's deficiencies.
I have no hesitation in recommending the Hotel dei Consoli.
Perfect Trip!!!

This past March we were fortunate to travel to Rome. We stayed at Hotel Dei Consoli in the Prati district just by chance. We booked a package deal through an on-line provider and just happened to find this wonderful hotel. I cannot say how happy we were that we found this place. Everything was wonderful about the place. The staff (especially Mario at the front desk), the cleaning persons, the buffet in the morning, everything was perfect. The location is perfect if you will be going to the Vatican. If you are going anywhere else, it can be done by foot, but by traveling 5 blocks north, you find the Metro, and after a while...you can get around just fine like the locals. Great restaurants are all within walking distance from this hotel. We dined several times at Zigaetara. Very hip, trendy, and fun!! Great food and good value. This resaurant is just 2 blocks away. Another great find was a restaurant called La Rustichella. It was about a 14 block walk, but so worth the effort. Very wonderful find!! We felt like I local after dining there several times!! Not a tourist place, as you could see the staff greet all the locals at the door with a hug and a welcome. If you have the chance, all 3 places deserve to be visited!!! The hotel and restaurants, all wonderful!!!!!!
Nice hotel

Hi everyone,
I just got back from Rome after staying at the Dei Consoli Hotel. My girlfriend and I got there on the day that the pope died so it was pure chaos around the area of the hotel. We couldn't get back to our hotel using the regular bus routes, and had to do a lot of walking on the cobblestone roads of Rome.
Anyways, as far as the hotel, the rooms are very small. We were really cramped in terms of space. Our room did not have a bath, which my girlfriend needed, and I have to say I needed as well to soak my body in after putting it through so much walking. The European showerhead was definitely strong though, and helped massage some soreness away.
The hotel facade is somewhat deceiving as the bottom of the hotel is actually occupied by businesses. The lobby is very small, and is only a passageway to the elevator.
The breakfast was nice, since they had scrambled eggs and some choices for deli style slices of meat. The person serving the cappucino is a really nice guy who was always kind.
The rooms do get pretty hot at night, especially since they don't turn on the a/c until summertime. My girlfriend asked to see about turning the a/c on, and that was the response she got. We kept the window open partly at night, but the streets were so noisy that eventually we had to close them up again.
I did get a good deal through an internet website.
I do have to say that I was not that impressed by the meals that I had in Rome. We, as Americans, have the best Italian food by far according to my taste buds, which are pretty well developed. I don't know, but the food was just all right. The wine on the other hand was good and inexpensive.
Do not take the Green Line Bus Tours, they drop you off and never come back for you. The Original Rome Tours on the red buses are much more frequent.
Gorgeous Hotel With Character and Class

This was one of the greatest hotels I have stayed at. It's character, class, the attention to detail, comfort, and location make it the perfect place to stay in Rome. The hotel is right near the Vatican and about a 20 minute walk to the Spanish Steps. The service was impeccable. Immediately upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly worker at the front desk and our luggage was quickly taken to our room for us. The staff was very friendly and always willing and able to answer our questions about sites, directions, and authentic Italian restaurants to eat at. The hotel itself is small, as are the rooms, but the attention to detail, character, and decorations are fabulous. I thought I would be bothered by the room size before staying at the hotel, but the vast closet space and warm feeling of the room negated any potential feeling of stuffiness. The bed was firm yet very comfortable, the sheets and pillows were great (particularly the extra warm blankets stocked in the closet), and the crown molding detail and beautiful furnishings were a plus. There was plenty of closet space in our room to make up for lack of floor space. The bathroom was of decent size and very clean and nice. The buffet breakfast was great, as was the cappuccino - the best I have ever tasted! I will definitely stay here on future trips to Rome and strongly recommend it to anyone considering a place to stay. It was a hotel that I was excited to return to at the end of each day of sightseeing. I did extensive research on a Rome hotel and have no regrets about choosing the Dei Consoli. It surpassed all my expectations. I have attached photos of the front entrance, breakfast area, and room. Enjoy your trip to Rome!
Wonderful Short Break

My wife andI stayed here for three nights Feb /March .The hotel is very clean and the staff friendly and attentive. For a major city hotel the breakfast is very good with a selection of hot scambled eggs cold meats and cheeses and assorted patries and beverages.Checkout is 11.00am but the hotel provides a luggage room and full porterage.so you can checkout and leave your bags at the hotel until you need to leave for the airport. The nearest metro St Peters and the Vatican are all about 5 mins walk,All in all I unreservedly reccomend this hotel for value and location
A Real Gem

Just returned from 3 nights at the Dei Consoli. Great location within 5 mins of St Peters. Nothing too much trouble for the staff - superbly furnished room OK perhaps a bit small by "chain hotel" comparison but with everything needed.
Within minutes of Metro with easy and cheap links to all areas of the city and the sightseeing "hop on hop off" bus route 110 stops at St Peters. Once you have found your bearings however the "sights" are all withing walking distance.
Safe area with lots of quality shops for eating try Zigaetana -good food reasonable prices and friendly atmosphere.
Expectations not met.

My husband and I stayed for 4 nights in March 2005. It is TINY! This is less of a hotel, and more of a bed for the night. Albeit a comfortable clean bed, and decent value for money (£50 each per night b&b through Octopus Travel). Although convenient for St Peters, I would have preferred to have stayed at the other side of the river, which is where we headed each night for a meal. I cannot compare this hotel with others in Rome as I have never stayed in them, which is possibly why I feel unable to rave about it to the same extent as the other reviewers. However, the service could not be faulted except that the 'bar', which was open until late at night, was unmanned and deserted. Also nothing was done about the dreadful smell of drains in our bathroom which permeated the whole room. Not a nice welcome back in the evening! Don't take many clothes as there is little space to put them. All in all, a pleasant enough place to stay for a few days sightseeing, but not a place I'd rush back to.

I just returned a few days ago and really liked the hotel a lot. The location was nice and quiet, and safe to walk around late at night. The hotel is beautiful and very clean, and except for the cold rude woman mentioned in a previous post, the rest of the staff really made you feel welcome and went out of their way to please, especially the gentleman manning the breakfast room in the morning (which was delicious). That woman should be in a position where she is not dealing with people.
My room was small, but the closet space was ample - I expected the small room so this did not come as a surprise.
It seemed as if I could reach everywhere in Rome within 20 mins to a half hour - which was fine because we really enjoyed walking the city.
I would recommend this hotel to a traveller who isnt looking for a large hotel - but is looking for a bed and breakfast type deal.
