cheap restaurants

by deshie

3 of us are staying near the Trevi fountain in late feb. Can anyone recommend any cheap, but good, restaurants nearby.

Il Piccolo Buco on Via dei Lavatore up the street from the Trevi Fountain is a small family run restaurant. The food is great and not too expensive.

You don't say how cheap is cheap. The cheap places sell prepacked tasteless garbage, put on a plate to look like it was baked in a kitchen. We liked both Maccheroni (10 minutes from Trevi) and the Bear (15 minutes just N of Piazza Navona) (both on my Rome page) for good food at reasonable prices. Karl

The very cheapest places sell pizza by the slice. Here is my Rome restaurant tip for Trattoria der Pallaro - the best bargain found in Rome center:
This is the most unique restaurant I have found in all of Rome! Not only is the food just great - but these people have fun serving you. Be seated and before you can even arrange your belongings, the antipasto of the day arrives along with the day's wine - a steady stream of courses follow. All the while, they might be poking fun at customers - sitting down at your table - telling people they have no choices but they'll eat when they have time to serve them. First-time customers here may look shocked - the regular Roman clientele will be laughing. You will receive the specialites of the day - each one typical Roman cusine - home cooked flavor - and all delicious.

You'll find the inscription: 'Qua se magna quello che passa casa' in Roman slang 'Here you eat what we give you" - always home made and of the best quality. You will feel as in the kitchen of a family. A five course meal of typically Roman food, including wine, coffee.

Ask Paola to go down to the wine cellar and have a quick look to the ancient Roman ruins of a theatre that are under your feet !!

We paid 46 Euro for complete dinner for 2 with many courses - wine of the day - desert - and expresso capper! Ask for limoncello after dinner.
Largo del Pallaro, 15
Directions: Behind Piazza Campo de Fiori - walk to the end of the Piazza so that you are behind the statue of Bruno - cut directly through the small archway to Lago del Pallaro

Hi Carol, I thought Bruno was kind of in the middle of the piazza. So do you start back to back with Bruno and then walk towards the archway? I am trying to visualize for next time I am in Rome. Karl

Hi Karl - Yes, you are right - you will be back to back w/Bruno - pass the building on left w/frescos - through archway - left into Lago der Pallero - left to restaurant. For sure, you will vini, vici, vino - then nap! I really love that - best description yet of today's life in Roma!

We liked L'Archetto di Fontana di Trevi (Via dell'Archetto 26, 00187 Roma).

Travel Tips for Rome

Have an audience with the...

by thunderbox

Have an audience with the Pope. These are real easy to come by. Actually our chorus got to sing for the Pope for about 2 mins. We sang some crazy latin hymn. There were about 300 other choruses there from all over the world. My fave was the one that just kept singing Viva la Popa!

Ear plugs

by mvtouring

Earplugs will really help you make your holiday on to remember, not one you want to forget. There could be street noise - even with double-glazed windows. There could be noise from the hallway, the room next to you, etc

Train ticket purchases in Italy

by icunme

When purchasing train tickets to cities in Italy, it is most helpful to know the Italian name of your destination city - Florence is "Firenze", Milan is "Milano", Rome is "Roma", etc. If you do not speak Italian, you can bring your map with you when purchasing tickets and point to your destination. You do need the correct Italian name if purchasing your tickets from the automatic purchasing machines at major train stations.

Group gatherings in Rome - lunch or dinner

by icunme about Groups coming to Rome??

We live in Rome and know a few good restaurants (not listed here) who will welcome your group - either for a set menu/price or for full menu choices. These are NOT the typical "tourist" restaurants. These are where local Italian people go for good food at excellent prices, with welcoming ambiance, and service that says they hope to see you again.

E-mail us with your dates and the number in your group. We'll be happy to give you some ideas - we've assisted others who have enjoyed excellent lunch and dinner gatherings at very fair prices in bella Roma.
