Thanks!
Re: pin #

I've always done it with 4.
Re: pin #

Always 4 in Europe.
Re: pin #
by rkearns
yeah, don't you just enter the same pin you use in your home country? i use 4 also.
Re: pin #

It depends on the individuals bank requirements but all banks I've ever investigated require ONLY 4 digits for international travel. I have to continually reset my business pin when I travel out of the US which is frequently. I'm not certain of the issue, but it seems international banks software can only handle a 4 digit pin.

It is 4 and needs to be numbers
Re: pin #

thanks everyone! I thought it was just 4 but I seem to remember having to get a longer one when I went to Spain, so I thought I would just ask to be sure: )
Thank you

Our italian PINs have 5 digits (numbers), but that doesn't mean our ATMs (bancomat) don't accept shorter ones. Maybe (underlined maybe) you just need to tell the machine you're done with your digits by hitting "enter" (conferma, often green, key)
Ciao

I was in Rome recently and used my 4 digit numeric PIN and had no trouble at all. As far as I know, 4 digits AND numeric is the standard and has worked everywhere I have been.
Travel Tips for Rome
Roma Pass
by SJTravel
If you are going to be staying in Rome for 3 days or more and you plan to go to a lot of sites, I recommend the Roma Pass. It gives you free entrance to your first 3 sites and then a reduced rate to the rest of the sites you visit in 3 days. I downloaded a list of all of the sites and discounts from the Roma Pass website. It was very helpful in deciding which places to go to but some of the prices are inaccurate because in Rome if a museum has a special exhibit, they charge you more for the entrance. So you have to know how much every site's entrance is on the days you are there to work out how to get the best deal. You want to make sure you visit the most expensive sites for your first 2 sites to get the most for your money. The Roma Pass also lets you use transportation for free for those 3 days. Please note that the Roma Pass cannot be used at all sites. Don't waste your money at any of the free sites on those 3 days. Some things I recommend using the Roma Pass for: Colosseum/Forum/Palatine Hill, Capitoline Museums, Ostia Antica (and transportation to Ostia), Borghese Gallery, National Museums of Rome.

Tipping is not required but it is customary, depending on whether or not you feel it is a good service or not. If you liked the service then, an amount between 5% and 10% of the bill should be tipped. Some restaurants in Rome include gratuities in the bill, as well as the cover charge.

About 20 km south of Rome, is Frascati, famous for its light and dry white wine. Many of the town's restaurants specialize in the local wine and it is widely available in all local shops. The town itself is also very pleasant. The picture shows Villa Aldobrandini as seen from Piazzale Marconi.
from the airport to the city center
by monorailgold
There are basically three ways to get to Rome City Center from the FCO Airport. One of the easiest ways to get from the fuimicino airport to the termini station in the center of Rome is to take the express train known as the Leonardo Express. Just follow the signs and take the escalator upstairs to the terminal. The train (Leonardo Express) leaves the station at 6 and 36 minutes past the hour so it is easy to catch. Buy your ticket from one of the ticket machines or from a ticket agent. Tickets are cheap and easy to get. The trip into town will cost 11 euros. Make sure to validate your ticket before boarding the train. There is a hefty fine if you don't. The train will drop you off at the end of the termini station. It is a little bit of a walk to get outside the main area where the cabs are, so either pack lightly or make sure the wheels on your suitcase are in good condition. From here you can either walk or take a cab to your hotel.
Another way to get to the city center is to take a cab directly to your hotel. There is a fixed rate of 40 euros from FCO to any hotel in the city center. Catch a cab at the rank outside the airport. Make sure not to take one from anyone who approaches you. They will charge you double or triple what it should cost. Also, before you get in the cab confirm the 40 euro fare. If there are 3 of you traveling together this is the less expensive way to go.
The last way to get to your hotel is by hiring a private company to pick you up. There are two companies that get good reviews on this and other forums. romecabs.com and airportconnection.it. They will charge between 45-55 euros but will meet you outside of baggage claim, help you with your luggage and can be arranged in advance. Not having to worry about transportation after a long flight is also a big plus.
Standing or Sitting
by tini58de
This is a general information for all those, who want to have a little snack in one of the many snack places:
if you eat or drink while standing at the bar or at the counter, you pay less! Expect to pay twice the amount (or in the center up to 5 times!!!), when you decide to eat at one of the tables!!!
