May 13th holiday

by angela6571

I will be in Rome on May 13th and I have read that it is a holiday for the Feast of the Ascension. Can anyone tell me who this will effect the city? Will any of the churches or museums be closed?

Thanks,
Angela

In Italy the Ascension is celebrated on the Sunday (this year it is May 16th), no holiday on the 13th.

Plan your trip to the Eternal City without regard to this church-based holy day (holiday) having an impact on state-owned and state-run establishments. It is unlikely that state-run museums or archaeological site, such as the Roman Forum or the Colosseum, will be closed on 13.May.2010, the Feast of the Ascension. It is also unlikely that churches will be closed for this feast day, either. I would venture to guess that even the Vatican Museums will open.

You will be fine. Have a great time in my favorite city. Take a look at my Rome Travel Page on VT for tips on things to do and places to eat. buon viaggio!

Travel Tips for Rome

Pope John Paul II

by bugalugs

On the Sunday morning we decided that the first place to visit was St. Peters Basilica. You can imagine how delighted we were that when we arrived the Pope was saying Mass. The piazza was packed and we were standing near the back, but that did not lessen our enjoyment. As you can see from the photograph there are large screens to be able to see everything much better.

When mass is being celebrated in the piazza, entry into St. Peters is not possible.

Romans don't worry about a broken glass

by icunme

The modest entrance of Ditta Leone Limentani (embellished in the picture above by a cipollino column of Portico di Ottavia) leads to a large basement depot where, in a maze of shelves, Romans go to find a replacement of that dish or that glass that a maladroit guest broke at their last party.

Flea Market

by AstrOlga about Porta Portese

As many markets of this kind, spending a few hours here is not only shopping, is making an experience. You can find anything in Porta Portese, and especially have fun. A lot of "real" people! Every sunday morning. Bargain! Bargain!

How to go from Ciampino Airport to Roma Termini st

by gmg61

During the day take the shuttle bus from Ciampino to Roma Termini station (http://www.terravision.eu/rome_ciampino.html). It costs Euro 8.

At night, there is no Terravision service, but two urban buses depart - even if at odd times - from the airport (at 23.50 and 00.15) and from the station (at 4.45 and 4.50).
It's a 30 minutes trip.

Pizza at p.za Navona

by kbsunnyside about Ristorante Virginae

Staff has always been nice and the prices aren't bad, especially for such a tourist filled spot. I usually get pasta. They have daily specials and the rabbit is good. The pizza is ok, but I've had better at other places.
