Travel Tips for Rome

Decorative Fountains

by mrclay2000

Most of the public fountains pipe out drinkable water. Some are merely decorative (Piazza Navona), but dozens are meant to be used as drinking fountains, such as this one beside San Giovanni in Laterano. The obelisk it supports, one of fifteen throughout the city, is the highest in Rome.

Etruscan Rome

by GeoDenia

Several important Etruscan archaeological sites, overbrimming with tombs, lie within easy reach of Rome. To help arrest the deterioration of these fragile remains, most sites are viewed from behind glass. One of the most important cities of the Etruscan League of city-states was Tarquinia, believed to have been founded in the 12th century BC. It was home to the Tarquin kings, who ruled Rome before the Republic. The necropolis here contains tombs richly decorated with frescoes, and the medieval town features several churches and the National Museum, full of Etruscan treasures, including a beautiful terracotta frieze of winged horses taken from the Etruscan site. Cerveteri was founded in the 8th century BC, and is famous today for the tombs known as tumoli, great mounds of earth with carved stone bases. Veio was once the largest city in southern Etruria, but today the only remains from this period are portions of a swimming pool and the lower section of a temple. Back in Rome, head for the Etruscan Museum in the Villa Borghese.

Transportation to/from the airport

by 24debbie

We booked transportation to/from Rome Airport through Viator.com. We ended up being a day late due to flight delays and had no trouble finding the shuttle desk in the airport. They did not give us any trouble about the dates. It was a clean bus and took us right to our hotel. I would recommend it highly

Best Pizza in Town

by GroovyDoc about Pizzeria di Baffetto

Multiple books ranked this restaurant as the best place in all of Rome for thin crust pizza. In addition to the great food, I found the owner, Signore Baffetto to be very kind and friendly. Customers are seated "family-style" so that usually you are sitting with strangers. I sat with two girls from Brazil who were quite fun. It opens for dinner at 6:30 pm. The pizza, of course. Get the Baffetto...it's the house special.

Take a Tour

by SullyBiz

There was only one tour I actually felt I needed to take in Rome and that was the Saint Peter's, Vatican Museums, and Sistine Chapel Tour. I think you can pretty much walk around any ruins or museum and appreciate on your own normally, but there was a lot of ground to cover here.

I went through Angel Tours and absolutely loved them. The guides (from Ireland) were friendly, funny, and knowledgeable. I actually appreciated the Sistine Chapel much more because of the history we were given before going in, and I left feeling like I learned something.

The tour was given in a group of about 15 people and lasted about 4 hours. It cost 25 euro (plus I gave a bit of a tip) and you pay in cash once the tour is over. They also do tours for the other major sites and a free tour of the Pantheon.
