Coming to Rome

by mccalpin

OK, guys, it's a spring splurge! I am going to London on business at the end of the month, and I have decided to add on a long weekend in Rome afterwards for a refresher course...

I know you guys have posted many suggestions for hotels but I don't know how many of the more inexpensive ones will have Internet access (either ethernet or Wi-Fi, I don't care). I plan on working and using Skype so free (or very cheap) access is quite important.

Otherwise, I won't need room service or any of that stuff (with a loaf of broad, cheese, and a big bottle of wine from the local market, who needs room service? ;-) ), just a basic clean place to sleep...

I'll be going in an out of Rome on trains so near Termini or Trastevere (or even another station) is fine...actually, near San Pietro would be cool, too...but the right hotel in another part of town would be absolutely fine...

Thoughts?

Bill, why don't you try to reach VTer Icunme (Carol). She has been living in Roma now for a few years now. Maybe you could even split a bottle of vino and a loaf of bread. She once lived in my neck of the woods, Beverly Hills, CA. Quando a Roma. ;-)

Thanks, Larry, I know she lives there, and if she doesn't post here in a bit, I'll send her an email...

Re: Coming to Rome

Hi Bill,
You could look into staying at Hotel Columbus on via della Conciliazione, right by St.Peter's. It's a magnificent Renaissance palazzo, I enjoyed my stay there. Rate was one I got with plane ticket purchase, about USD 140 per night I think.

I found staying there very restful in all ways. After exploring Rome all day, the Vatican and its special atmosphere was a real haven. I actually looked forward to crossing the Tiber back into my peaceful spot every night!
Hotel Columbus has a good breakfast and a very pleasant garden restaurant for lunch (nuns and priests seem to love its spaghettata :)
My single room was monastic, next time I'd go for a "double for single use" if they have it.
Internet access is inexpensive, enquire at Front Desk.

Buon viaggio a Londra e Roma!

Re: Coming to Rome

by mccalpin

Thanks, Lou! I know where this place is, and the Internet is high speed and apparently free...and it's even around the corner from my favorite nondescript restaurant in Rome ;-)

Unfortunately, they have doubles available for 200 euro a night, and even the 20% discount for 4 nights doesn't bring it down a lot...:-(

Still, it's a great location and I will keep it on the list!

Re: Coming to Rome

Bill, I can certainly recommend from first hand experience, the Mecenate Palace on the Via Carlo Alberto near Maria Maggiore Basilica. I have just checked out their website and the rate for a standard double over a weekend is between 105 and 115 euro per night. If you have not settled on anything yet, please check it out. I'm sure you will be very happy with it.

Hi Bill,
Take a look at the Hotel Rex, more or less opposite the opera house.
I do know they have free wifi access.

Re: Coming to Rome

Thanks, Francesco and Dom. Actually, the second hotel on lacristina's page looks even better (well, the first one is full ;-) ), and Dom, your suggestion is also in the same price range. I will look at both!

Do the statues talk, yes if in Rome

by croisbeauty

There are four of five so-called talking statues in Rome, but I've find this one only. Locals use them for various motiffs today, someone to attached his thesis, the others to present their poems or novels, while some to complain about problems they faced living in the city of Rome. I was in particularly attracted by this graphities, which are aimed against Vatican and some priests who have been discovered as a pedofils. There was big scandals recently in Italy about that issue.

Head Off To the Castelli Romani For A Nice Weekend

by Krystynn

The Castelli Romani (Roman Hills) region - located just 40KM away from bustling Rome - is famed for its production of wine and local cuisine. This region also boasts of many interesting castles and villas from Villas Torlonia, Falconieri and Aldobrandini to the Castle of Santa Severa and Castello Odescalchi di Bracciano - which I'll be introducing to you very shortly.

We were there for a weekend of fun at our company's private dinner.

The Venue?

The Castello Odescalchi di Bracciano, one of the most beautiful medieval castles in Europe. Built sometime in the 2nd half of the 1400's, the castle is located in the little town of Bracciano and overlooks the volcanic lake of Bracciano.

Here's the full address of the Castle:

Odescalchi Castle
Piazza Mazzini, 14 - 00062
Bracciano (Italy)

Decent "Tourist" Restaurant

by rattay about Steak House

This restaurant is geared towards American tourists in case you couldn't guess by the name of it. The only reason I recommend it is for the view the upstairs terrace has of the Colosseum at night. I heard the steak is quite good too (I'm a vegetarian and I was relatively happy with the non-steak meals there). Like I said, I don't eat meat, but my friends really did like the steak. I liked the cheesy/romantic view.
