Average/Good Rome Hotel

I have stayed many times at this hotel for a few weeks on each trip.
The high’s are: free shuttle (to/from airport & downtown Rome), the full breakfast & the reasonable rates for an average Rome hotel. There is a metro rail service a block away but going to/from at night is a big concern (some tourists have been robbed).
The low’s are; very noisy rooms (no sound proofing in the walls & the Rome dog pound is two blocks away so lots of barking dogs), heating/cooling in the spring/fall (either to hot or to cold), very expensive restaurant for lunch & dinner (plus it does not open for dinner until 7.30pm), the area can be un-safe at night for a tourist, finally the hotel staff can be un-friendly at times.
There is a good local restaurant (on the road behind the hotel) that is 50% cheaper & twice as good (open from 7.00pm Monday thru Saturday).
I would recommend a non-smoking room on a high floor, facing the front of the hotel in the spring & facing the back the rest of the year.

This hotel is on a business park half way between the airport and the city centre (about 25 km from each) . There is a free shuttle bus into town but the last one back is at 8 pm (there used to be one at 11 pm but it no longer runs): a taxi from the city centre is about 30 euro on the meter. The rooms and bathroom are a bit utalitarian but a good size and comfortable - every room I have stayed in has had two double beds. A plus is that it is quiet (unusual in Rome) - in the winter you can leave the window open. The aircon is OK but not brilliant.
The bad news is that the hotel has zero atmosphere and the restaurant is both expensive and dire. There is a restaurant around the corner which is about a third the price and of comparable quality, but still not memorable. There is nothing else within walking distance.
The clientele is a mixture of bus parties (mainly Japanese) and business people, who use it because it is on the business park.
Expensive for what it is - our corporate rate is 168 euro per night including (a mediocre) breakfast
Airport hotel, dont' expect much

This hotel is great if you just need a night to stay in on your way out of Rome (or ITaly for that matter). They have a free airport shuttle that makes it easy to get to the airport and to the city center. BUT beware of trying to catch the last shuttle out of the city (the 8pm shuttle) as the possibility of the shuttle being full exists, and you may have to take a taxi back. They really should have a 2nd shuttle or do 2 trips on days when they can expect to be beyond capacity. We tried to catch the 8pm shuttle back on a Saturday evening, after a heavy, HEAVY downpour of rain. You should have seen the mad rush to get on the bus. Women and children pushing to get on, men fighting to get their wives/children on the bus. A bit surreal.
Hotel staff are closer to rude on the spectrum than friendly. Exceptions were the lady cleaning the bathrooms in the lobby and the man holding your luggage for you while you had breakfast! Maybe the rain put everyone in a bad mood!
Rooms are clean and decent for what they cost (we paid $165/night). But dont expect much- its really a transit hotel.
Ok for stop over

I stopped over for one night with family, room was spacious and quite good. Staff helpful and friendly. Outdoor swimming pool was good, if you can brave the cold water (ok when you are in).
I agree with the other review that the food in the restaurant was poor. Club sandwich from the bar was good though.
Good for stopovers not for a base it is in the middle of a business park.
ps. shuttle bus to airport has a break from 10.30am to 2.45pm. I had to get a taxi which cost me 30 Euros. (more time by the pool though).
Great hotel for budget travellers

It may seem there are more CONS than PROS, but we did enjoy our stay, we just had to lower our standards a little.
PROS:
Clean, spacious rooms.
Friendly, accomodating staff.
Excellent restaurant behond the hotel -we had full course dinners for 2 Including a bottle of local wine for just 30.00EUR **Open 12-2 for lunch and 7-12 for dinner, closed on Sunday
Beautiful garden sitting area, pool, bar
CONS:
Paper thin walls - we were able to hear our neighbour get up everymorning and go to the bathroom
Very uncomfortable bed - we ordered every possible pillow on the Holiday Inn pillow menu, but it would not mask the fact that we were sleeping on the firmest mattress ever made
Location - OK, it's not that bad, and they even have a shuttle bus that takes you right downtown - capitol hill. But if you want to catch the last free ride back to the hotel, you have to forfeit seeing Rome at night (last bus leaves downtown at 8:00pm) you could take the metro back, it's a 7-10 minute walk from the hotel to the metro station, but other travellers have said it's not the type of neighborhood you want to walk through at night. And if your're staying at this hotel for buget reasons, forget taking a taxi.
Internet is expensive if you don't have your own computer.
The hotel restaurant is really expensive, and posh, but the food is horrible. I recall hearing the table next to us ask the waiter "Is this suposed to be hot? Because it's not" They served us stale bread for EUR5.00
Shuttle needs repair

It's an America-style Holiday Inn with nice, big, quite rooms. The restaurant is beautiful with white tablecloths and waiters in white jackets.
The downsides are: 1) the hotel is isolated in a businesspark. 2) Their restaurant is your only choice 3) Their restaurant is overpriced with average food. 3) They offer internet access @ 22 euros/day. 4) Their shuttle to central Rome (Victor Emmanuel Monument) runs every 4 hours, and it is frequently so overcrowded that people are left behind and must pay 35 euros for a taxi.
Good for certain situations

The best scenario for staying at this hotel is if you are passing through Rome and want a reasonably nice, well-priced place to stay. The breakfast was included in my rate of 115 euro and I thought it was nicely done. I ate two other meals there however....and felt that food was expensive and not very good. I have since seen in other reviews that there is another restaurant in the area and I will try that one if I stay there again.
My experience on using the bus to Rome was that coming back from the hotel on the last bus, at 8 pm, it was a mad scramble - not everyone got on. You can take a train to the hotel, but the I believe the fare from Rome (and it isn't from the Termini station) is 5 euro each. So if you miss the bus, don't want to take the train, and thus end up using a taxi, your good rate at the Holiday Inn just got a lot more expensive. Also, when you are taking the bus from the hotel into Rome, be sure to be out there to catch it early. I wasn't, and nearly didn't get on.
Overall, my stay there was positive. But if you want to be able to stroll around Rome in the evening, and then go back to your hotel, you'll have to use public transportation.

Hotel near Airport (FCO)

I think I have decided on a hotel for the Rome leg of my February trip, but on the last day we will travel by train from Venice to Rome. The next morning we will have an early flight.
It seems to make sense to stay as close to the airport as possible. I don't need fancy, but I do like my own bathroom, clean rooms, and a front desk that is at least modestly helpful.
Any suggestions?

Ciao! There's only one hotel I know of that's at the airport, the Hilton. It's a very nice hotel, but expensive, though though it's possible to get deals.

Maybe someone else at VT knows something close by though not at the airport.
Early in the morning (before 7) a taxi ride shouldn't take more than 35 minutes or so from the center of Rome. Traffic seems to get worse after 7:15 or so. It's easy to get your hotel to order a taxi for you ahead of time.

You can chec which hotels are available in the area (i gues you're landing at Da Vinci/Fiumicino).
