Driving the A1 highway from Rome to Pompeii

by frontman9000

I will be driving a rental car from Rome to Pompeii & Castellammare di Stabia. The A1 toll road seems to be the most direct route. What kind of traffic should I anticipate on this road and is it dangerous, scenic or enjoyable ride? I will starting out on a Saturday morning in mid-April and driving back to Rome two days later on a Monday. Any thoughts?

www.viamichelin.com route planner tells me:
Time: 02h34 including 02h13 on motorways
Distance: 247km including 237km on motorways
including 123km on scenic roads.
Toll for this route looks to be 13.60 euro.

The A1 is a puppy. Just look in your rear view mirror before pulling out to overtake.

we have driven this several times and most of the way it is three lanes each way, narrowing to two lanes below Naples for the last few miles into Pompeii. Easy, not crowded, and as I recall no tolls. Flat and straight, but not really that scenic. Let me repeat fast.

beware to do not do more than 130km/h or 110km/h when it's raining, between Rome and Caserta there is a system for measuring average motorway speeds (“Tutor”), fines are very expensive. :)

Travel Tips for Rome

P Navona - Fontana dei Fiumi

by sandysmith

The 4 rivers fountain is built around the obelisk - four white marble statues, five metres tall which represent the rivers.
The first was by Claude Poussin and was dedicated to the Ganges, symbolising Asia; the Nile, representing Africa, was carved by Giacomo Antonio Fancelli, its veiled head standing for the up till then unknown source of the river, the Danube for Europe, carved by Antonio Raggi and finally the Rio de la Plata, representing America by Francesco Baratta.

Alban Hills

by mattreider

Unlike the suburban sprawl of American cities, Rome is still surrounded by wilderness and small towns. The alban hills and various lakes offer a quick respite from the city, ask the Pope who has his summer residence here. Once again, a VT regular took us on a day tour around the countryside, offering local tips, italian vocabulary, and general good company.

Trams and buses and subways OH MY!

by cotinara

Rome has a really great Tram/Bus system. Takes you to all the right places and on time. Subway is good too, but not as great as some other European countries. FYI, if you don't have a validated ticket on whatever mode of transportation, you WILL BE FINED 50 EURO!! BUT, you can take a chance and wing it. We bought a ticket for 3 days, validated it the first time we used it, and then forgot about it each time. Not the smartest thing to do, but its up to you and we didn't really care truth be told. Validation is easy, with these yellow boxes inside the vehicle that you put your ticket into.

Bus 64 is good at taking you all over especially to Termini. Also, all stops have easy to follow stop finders. You will be fine, first time will be weird but after that..easy as pie.

Cave Canem - Best Dinner We Had in Rome

by WheninRome about Cave Canem

Cave Canem is a local place in Trastevere and it is amazing! We arrived early in the evening (around 18:00) when the place was dead, but by the time we left at 19:30 it was packed! And it appeared to be almost all locals.

We started with a liter of the house red wine, fried rice balls and a liter of water. This was the best house wine we had while in Rome. The rice balls were delicious. My wife had a prima piatte (first course) pasta dish that consisted of a slightly spicy pasta dish with red marinara sauce. It was the best pasta that she had during our week in Rome. I tasted it and was blown away by its perfect balance of spice and texture.

I had the best pizza of my life. I can't remember its name, but it had black olives, artichokes, ham, mushrooms and to top it off, a sunny side up egg in the middle (see picture below). It was a thin crust pizza as are most pizzas in Rome. It was amazing! I ate every bite! I don't know if I will ever have another pizza that good again.

The total cost of our meal was 31 Euros, which is not bad at all for dinner in Rome and it was worth every penny and more. Everything on the menu looked amazing. My pizza with a cooked egg in the middle was the best pizza of my life. The atmosphere was perfect.
