Before our trip to Rome I did a lot of reading and I was a little bit worried about crossing the streets. Yes, the city is busy and the traffic is heavy at times (almost all the time), but there are lots of crosswalks in the city. The cars stop to let pedestrians cross the street, so you do not have to be nervous about it. Just use common sense and do not attempt to cross the street if there is no crosswalk. I was expecting total chaos and craziness (due to all the stuff I was reading on this topic), but in fact I was very impressed with the civilized manner in which people behave in heavy traffic and crowded side walks.
