Very convenient for Termini

Good (3.0 of 5.0 stars)
by written on September 14, 2014

We chose this hotel because we would be staying only one night in Rome and it made sense to be near the station where would both arrive and depart – and of the many in that area, this was available at a good price on the night of our stay. Reviews on Booking.com were largely positive, though with some criticism of room size and street noise – staying one night the former wouldn't be an issue, and the latter is hard to avoid in a big city. But the evening before we travelled, checking the location on Google maps, I spotted some very negative reviews which complained of unhelpful staff, dirt and even bed bugs! Too late to easily change our plans, we crossed our fingers and hoped they were wrong. And fortunately they were. We found this to be a pleasant enough three star city hotel, fine for a short stay such as ours, though with more time in the city I would choose to stay in a more attractive area. This one is safe enough though, and as I have said, very convenient – just two blocks from Termini.

When we checked in we found that we had been allocated a room in the next door building – not a problem for us, though a Canadian couple we talked to at breakfast the next day told us they had complained about such a move and been able to switch. The room was not large, but fine for two people staying one or even a few nights. There was adequate storage (a wardrobe and several drawers), a decent TV, a comfortable bed (and on asking for an extra pillow I was given one willingly – so much for the unhelpful staff!). The bathroom had a small walk-in shower and all the fittings looked new, as did the bedroom furniture. It does puzzle me though why Italian hotels think that a table cloth makes for an adequate towel!

We entered through a nice courtyard but our room faced the street and despite double glazing was a little noisy, although nothing that the ear-plugs with which I always travel couldn't block out. The main disadvantage of being in this separate building was that we couldn't access the free wifi, something I would have queried had we been staying longer (and maybe would have asked for a small discount, since that had been one reason for choosing the hotel over others nearby). But with data roaming charges in Europe now much more reasonable, that wasn't a big deal.

Breakfast was served in the main building, in a pleasant light room off the lobby. There was cereal, yoghurt, rolls, cheese, ham and jams, cakes and pastries. Coffee was from a machine but OK, but the orange juice, also from a machine, was terrible - like water with a few drops of juice added! Apart from this I thought the breakfast was adequate for the price we were paying and better than some I have had in Italian hotels.

On the whole we were happy with our stay and certainly found none of the issues mentioned in those negative reviews. Either the proprietors have got their act together since then, or those people were incredibly fussy – or reviewing a different hotel!

Directions: If you leave Termini by the exit on the east side (turn left after coming from the platform) the hotel is just two blocks straight ahead and one to the left. See on Google maps
