accomodation in Rome,Venice and Florence

by lesalan

My wife and I (from Melbourne Australia) are visiting Italy in early May 2005. We are looking for reasonably priced accomodation in these 3 places, which are close to the sights or quickly accessably by public transport. We would like a private room with own bathroom. Nothing fancy, just clean comfortable and reasonably priced.
Any advice greatfully received.

I just got back from Venice and stayed in a very nice hotel. You can find more info here:
Since you're going early May, it'll be high season and prices tend to be at their highest in Italy.

Thanks for the information Mahieu. We have only travelled on tours before (New Zealand and USA) This time we are being more adventurous. You seem to have travelled a lot. I envy you.
Thanks again.

I was in Italy (all of the places you listed in May 2004). Here are the places that I stayed. Nothing fancy, but close to the trains and the heart of the city.

Venice: Hotel Olympia. (near the train station and about a 15-20 minute walk from San Marcos)

Florence: Hotel Machiavelli (near the train station and in the heart of Florence. Walking distance to the museums, markets, Duomo, etc)

Rome: Hotel Contilia
(near the train station, metro line, Coloseum, Forum, Mouth of Truth)

All of these hotels offered breakfast each morning.

Hope this helps you as you plan your trip! Have a wonderful time.

Viè a vvéde le bbellezze de mi' nonna.

Piazza Navona

by TRimer

I highly recommended visiting and eatting at the Piazza Navona. Here the real attraction of the square is the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, dated 1651. The rivers represented in the fountain are the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the Rio de la Plata. They are arranged on a steep rocky reef from which a Roman obelisk taken from the Circus of Maxentius daringly rises up into the air. Popular tradition has it that the sculptures on the fountain symbolize the rivalry between Bernini and Borromini, who were the most important artists in 17th century Rome. Borromini built the church of Sant’ Agnese in Agone, which stands in front of Bernini’s Fountain. For this reason the personified Rivers seem to cover their faces, not to see Borromini’s “horrible” work.

Great Buses

by Donna_in_India

We found the bus system in Rome very easy to use. Take a bus back to the central (rail) station to change to any bus on the line. Must validate all bus tickets before boarding bus at orange stamping machine.

3 Day ticket 11E, 1 Day Ticket 4E. (Can transfer on single ticket within 75 minutes – stamp one end on first bus, stamp other end on second bus).

The Pizza Cult

by OttoMarzo about Formula Uno

Typical roman pizzeria in one of the trendiest areas of Rome. Formula Uno is very popular, maybe it's not a beautiful place to see but it's a great place to eat at. Romans, and tourists as well, are in love with this pizzeria. Fresh appetizers, good desserts, magnificent pizza, wonderful fried stuff. So easy to rich, absolutely in the top ten. Closed on sunday. Any kind of pizza, and "Filetti di Baccalà fritti".

The Coliseum in Rome

by manchandas

We decided to go with a tour guide into the Colissuem. This was a great decision since our tour guide had a great sense of humor and did a great job in explaining the history of the place. The amphitheater is one of the most important monuments of ancient Rome, where spectator watched bloody battles between gladiators and wild animals.
