Nativity Scenes
by WheninRome
One of the bonuses of traveling at Christmas-time in Rome is the abundance of beautiful Nativity Scenes. They ranged from large life-sized displays, to displays intermingled within ruins, to meticulous and extravagant miniature displays.
Feed the cats

As we were walking along Via Vittorio Emanuele from Piazza Venezia toward the Campo di Fiori we came upon the scene in the photo. As I have mentioned elsewhere, my wife's name is Sacra and a sign indicated that this was the "Area Sacra." I was disappointed to learn that she did not own any real estate in Rome, but found the place quite a sight. It is said to be one of the oldest ruins in Rome and purported to be near the site of Julius Casar's assassination. Now it is home to about 250 cats which are fed by volunteers. None are visible in the photo, but we saw several roaming around and there were bowls of water and food there for them.

Visit the CASTELLI ROMANI, which are just a short drive from Rome. The view of the volcanic Lake Albano is especially beautiful by night... You can also see the Pope's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.
Metro
by sinoda
There are 2 metro lines in Rome having one connecting point in stazione Termini.
At first the idea of two lines in an X-shape crossing the city seems fairly good. But the poor quality of the services AND the rather long waiting times AND the way too little waggons (capacity) of the metro make it an agonious trip at any time of day.
Use the buses - if they happen to run...

ANTICA CAFFE DELLA PACE
Via della Pace 5 [just off Piazza Navona] Reservations recommended for late evening, even if you only plan to drink.
Caffè della Pace is an anomaly: it's very, very old, and still very, very trendy. The tables wrap right around the coblestone corner, and yet on any given evening nearly every one will be occupied or marked 'reserved.' In winter, the beautiful people move indoors, into a toasty atmosphere of rococco sculptures and huge floral arrangements. A light snacks menu is served throughout the day, along with coffee, and there's a full bar (but prices are high by Rome standards).
