Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Hotel Des Artistes is a good hotel. Many people like it and rave about it. I stayed there twice, once in the main building and once in the annex. What I found was that the hotel owners and staff are very good marketing people. Over the years, their website has been edited, overhauled, and in some cases complete reinvented. With each change, the site looks and reads better. With each change, the hotel received more good reviews. This is the case of a self-fulfilling prophecy: the image is better than product, but there's enough "buzz" to create positive recommendations from people who may not have personal experience to substantiate their praise. I do not think the value you receive equals the cost. Yes, it is a good hotel, but not an excellent hotel or one of the best hotels for the money. Neither the location nor the facilities merit the high praise. A hotel that is owned and run by a group of young people who can speak English, a staff that is helpful, and a rooftop terrace is not that hard to find in Rome. The hotel's name projects a certain image that can only be found in a small part of the hotel, the part where the room rate is highest. The rest of the hotel is above average in cleanliness, average in comfort, and below average in upkeep. For the same rate that Hotel Des Artistes charge in the high season, I can easily find rooms that have the same standard in much better locations. For the same location that houses Hotel Des Artistes, I can easily find rooms that have the same standard for much lower price. Leave a Comment

 | | | | Hotel Des Artistes: Clean, Safe, Good breakfast & close to the termini
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The Hotel des Artistes quickly became a little haven for us weary women, with a large clean room, good beds, a hot shower w/wonderful water pressure, clean towels, internet access, a wonderful breakfast and a TV with more than one channel to zone out by and practice our Italian ear. I’m not used to staying by the termini but it became the Mecca of resources and the most perfect location to take care of business with these stranded tourists.
We were able to drop off laundry close by to get us through the next couple days. The name is Spla Shnet, at Via Varese # 33, owned by an African man but was being run by a young Aussie guy and his mate from Brisbane - or “Bris Vegas” as they called it - we liked them, very fun and efficient too. For 6 Euros they washed, dried and folded our clothes ( gotta love a man who will do this for a you) hence turning us into new and improved people Leave a Comment

 | | | | Hotel Des Artistes: Very friendly, clean place...
Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
As we travelled in February, we managed to get a nice room in the hotel - and not the hostel - and we thoroughly enjoyed it! From our arrival on, staff were very friendly and helpful, providing us with a map, pointing out things to see and do and offering advice. They also gave us 2 cards of their own restaurants with discounts. We sampled one of them and were extremely happy with the result (see restaurant tip). Our hotel room was very clean, with enough space for 2 people to move about comfortably. The cleaning service was excellent, even better than in a 4 * hotel we stayed at in Venice, and when they noticed that my fiance used the spare blanket as a spare pillow, they provided us with a spare pillow each!! It is probably very busy and much noisier in the summer but I'd definitely go back!
Our room was overlooking a back yard, looking out on neighbours' balconies. For that reason, it was quiet all day & night. The breakfast room serves as a bar at night but we were out too much. Also there was internet access in the room which unfortunately they had to give up due to a change in the law. Not sure if/when they can reinstate it. They also have a lovely roof terrace if you don't mind climbing a few steps! Nicely arranged with small tables, chairs and lots of pot plants for some privacy, it must be lovely to sit in the summer.... we even enjoyed some rays of sunshine up there on our last day! | | | | Hotel Des Artistes: Bellisimo!
| | | | |
This hostel has a nice lobby to welcome guests, though the reception's on the 5th story, which is a little bizarre. Service wasn't very prompt, nor was the man behind the counter polite when we asked to be checked-in. There's a life, albeit a tiny one, to help transport baggage to the higher floors, so no worries about having to break your back moving luggage. We stayed in a 10-bed dorm, which was rather basic (just 5 double-bunk beds) and a tad too small (not much space to move around) but it was clean! Blankets and sheets were provided. The toilets were communal (3 bathrooms and 3 toilet cubicles) which beats having an ensuite in my opinion cos it reduces the length of the waiting time to bathe. There's also a common room with sofas and computers, where you can get free internet access (pretty neat). A great place to meet fellow travellers from other countries! On the 7th floor is a beautiful rooftop terrace which was nicely decorated. It's the perfect place to relax after a long day of touring cos it's peaceful and you get to watch the stars as well! LOCATION: The neighbourhood is quiet and can be considered very safe even at night. One can find a supermercato, a gelateria and a couple of pizzarias near the hostel too. The hostel is also located close to 2 metro stations, one of them Stazione Termini, which makes it especially convenient when you arrive in Rome from other cities by train. All in all, we had a wonderful experience in Hostel Des Artistes and I would return to stay there again if my coin in the Trevi Fountain does its job to bring me back to the eternal city! Grazie di tutto!! Rome is beautiful!
