Transportation from Cruise Port
by pgilady
We will be arriving in Rome on Princess Cruise Lines on May 15 & have a hotel reservation in Rome.
What is the best & easiest method of transportation from cruise port to Cosmopolita Hotel, Via Di S. Eufemia, Rome? How far is this?
Princess has transport from ship to Ostiense for train into Rome. Is there any better method?

The "easiest" method is to take a private limo that you have pre-reserved, which will pick you up at the dock (at the gate outside, that is) and take you directly to your hotel. The distance is about 42 miles from Civitavecchia (where the "port of Rome" is) to the Rome city center, so the limo will be expensive (150 euro? it depends).
Whether or not this is the "best" method obvious depends on how deep your pockets are.
When the cruise line tells you "Ostiense", are they referring to the train station in Rome? That seems just a bit odd since that train station is on the other side of the city center from Civitavecchia. It's true, though, that this location has access to urban rail and Metro services. How much do they want for this trip, $75USD (that's what I've seen before for similar trips)?
Of course, if you are up for an adventure, you can walk to the train station in Civitavecchia (15 minutes), take the next local train to Rome for 4.50 euro 2nd class one way, and get off at one of several train stations in Rome.
So the questions are how deep are your pockets, how mobile are you, how comfortable are you winging it, and so on?

Bill, thanks for your helpful advice. After checking the map & seeing the distance, I certainly agree that Princess $69 p/person to transport to Ostiense & then take train, which would still require taxi to transport luggage to hotel didn't seem like the method we wanted to take. I have now checked out several limo services (found on Virtual Tourist & Cruise Critic) and will spend some bucks for this one. At our age, I don't want to waste so much energy on the first day of our visit in Rome.

Travel Tips for Rome
Alcohol
by Sol&Jo
We have heard this and can't stress it enough... predrink before you go to a bar or club or restaurant. The land of wine only has cheap wine at grocery stores. The other establishments will charge at least 6 or more euros for a bottle. Beer is not cheap either.
Light start to your day
by acemj
Most people in Rome, start their day with a light meal. Just grab a small pastry and an espresso and you'll fit right in. There was small place across from the hostel that just said "Snack Bar" that was great. You'll see the word "bar" on a lot of places and it doesn't mean bar in the American sense. Just stop in and make sure you eat standing for a cheaper tab.
CDs and DVDs
by OttoMarzo about Discoteca Laziale
It's my favourite shop in Rome, but maybe just because music is such a big part of my life. This shop is great because you can find anything you are looking for and for a very good price. Very very well specialized in alternative music. You can find pop music everywhere, this is absolutely the best shop to buy any other kind. This is not something about Rome in particular. Just it's a good chance to buy music for a good price. Pay attention to special prices, discounts are very common here. It depends on what you are buying and if it's special price or not, but you will surely pay less here than in other shops.
Via dei Fori Imperiali
by Tunda_F
Via Dei Fori Imperiali brings from Piazza Venezia to the Colossium...Mussolini built it to have a road on wich celebrate italians army (italian what?!),it is said he crushed a beatiful medioeval zone in order of doing it....well,every tourist that comes in Rome pass through this road. It's really impressive and here I just wanna say do not be scared or disgusted by the car traffic and noise, try to take two step on it during the deep night time, then tell how does it looks. The city must live, over the ruins and the glories of the past, under the gas clouds and noise of the present.
A Little Comfort Food
by WheninRome about Flann O'Brien Irish Pub
One day near Termini Train Station, we were in the mood for some comfort food. My wife wanted a salad with greens and I, ashamed to admit it, felt like having a burger. So, we swallowed our VT pride and went into this Irish Pub.
It was a decent lunch, not great, but not bad. My wife got her salad and I my burger and fries, and we were off to see more of Rome.
If your kids are having trouble eating or are anxious for a taste of home, this is a decent place with decent prices. Irish/American pub fare.
