Ruins of Rome
by Pawtuxet
Tossed about like children's toys, the remnants of ancient temples lie strewn around the ground. . . waiting for further study or identification or just because they are treasured as historic elements. Hard to imagine most cities assigning this valuable city space to architectural remnants of the past. I'm so glad the Italians have been gentle with their history.
A letter from the Vatican
by rexvaughan
I am sure you know that the Vatican is its own state and has its own post office. I think a neat thing to do is mail postcards from the Vatican post office to my friends back home. The ones who are catholic seem to appreciate it and it makes a nice souvenir. As you can see the stamps are very colorful and all are printed with "Vatican City" on them.
Rock Fountain in Villa Borghese
by icunme
Walking into Villa Borghese from the Piazza Flamini arch you will come to this lovely free flowing rock fountain. Yet another "secret of Villa Borghese" - it is found on Via Fiorello la Guardia and very close to the Museo Carlo Bilotti. Photos from each vantage point reveal a different flow and form.
I haven't been able to locate anything about this lovely fountain so if anyone has information regarding this fountain - its name, history, etc - please send it along to me.
I think the best way to travel...
by Meemi
I think the best way to travel to and from Rome is by airplane if you are travelling from abroad. It's the fastest and the easiest.
In our trip we used bus transportation to get distant places. It requires a little patient but anyway it was a good way to get aroud Rome.
For a snack in the heart of the city
by baronedivandastad about Shaki
This small place in the heart of the city was a very pleasant surprise. It's located a few steps from Via dei Condotti and Piazza di Spagna, in an area where most of the places offer crap to tourists.
But here it's another story. There is a chance to sit in the lovely terrace or inside, in a rather dark but stylish environment. The friendly staff has welcomed us on a Sunday afternoon, and accommodated us in the place we wanted.
The list is centered on snacks, and salads seem to take the lion's share. However, we took a bruschetta plate, which was really well done. We then went on with crepes with four cheese types (good, very cheesy) and with mushrooms (excellent). Also the "scamorza" (melted cheese base) with prosciutto was above average.
The wine list is quite small, but you can pick anything and you'll be fit. We had a really pleasant chardonnay from a little, semi-unknown farm from near Rome. A quick glance at the fridge reveals a taste in the beer list choice.
We closed with coffee (good, very special) and with a slightly higher bill than expected, where the wine was almost half of the price of the whole meal. And we had a bottle for three! A somewhat unpleasant note in an otherwise really good experience. But hey, we're in Centro Storico!
A thing worth a praise is their timetable: in a country where eating outside official hours often leads you to questionable places, here's a place that's open 11-23 and serves food all the time! The crepes with mushroom - outstanding!
