I need some one who knows the Rome airport like the back of their hand. I have a relatively tight connection coming up and am totally unfamiliar w/ this airport. I'm in on a Delta flight @ 7:15 AM, then out on an EL AL flight @ 10:15AM. EL AL says you should be at their counter three hours ahead but a bit less is OK. I would like to have some idea of the time required to get from the Delta gate (They change all the time and Delta is not able to say which gate or terminal they will use) to the EL AL counter (wherever that is). I assume after I'm at their counter, the clock will be reset on my checkin. I'm only using a carry on bag. Looking at a map of Fiumicino, it appears part of terminal C is quite a ways off. Need to know if (assuming my flight arrives there) using the Nevetta Skybridge will add greatly to the time I need to reach the El AL desk. Any info, hints, etc. will be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Some very detailed maps of the airport (different floors) at:
http://www.adr.it/portal/portal/adr/Fiumicino/Servizi/Mappa_Terminal_FCO
You may be able to check in online (express check-in) for the El Al flight, which will speed things up substantially. The facility is available in Rome:
http://www.elal.co.il/ELAL/English/AllAboutYourFlight/BeforeYourFlight/SelfCheckIn.htm
Although they ask you to be at check-in 3 hours beforehand, check-in does not close then (can't find out when from their website, but it is usually 40 minutes before departure). It is the online check-in availability which closes 3 hours beforehand. So you should have no problems checking in at the desk if your flight lands on time....Fiumicino is not that huge an airport.
The El Al check-in desk numbers will be up on the departure screens, so you will be able to see where to go.
Poster can stay in transit/airside. No need to leave the passengers area to go to the public check-in counters. As I understand from his posting he doesn't have any checked luggage so that is one worry less.
Security sensitive flights-such as El Al and all USA based airlines-leave from Terminal 5. However, arriving flights may disembark their passengers at Terminal 3. There is a bus service that connects Terminal 3 and Terminal 5.
So if the DL flight is on-time there is plenty of time to connect.
Below some articles from Rome airport's website about this (copy and paste it into your browser):

When you order a coffee it is normal to leave 5 or 10 cents as a tip with the receipt when you put it down on the counter. 5 or 10 cents is enough, as untiol 3 years ago it was nromal to leave 100 or 200 lire, so it is fine. Don't start big tipping as it only makes people then expect those big fat tips all the time. In Rome it is more a courtesy than an expected sort of thing. In Florence, you almost never see anyone tip for a caffee.
Strolling streets of your neighborhood is the only way to become familiar with the new surroundings. At the end of our street - the corner of Ludovisi and Aurora - is the Swiss Institute - a formidible villa/palace. Aurora runs parallel with Via Veneto and Ludovisi crosses them both.
If you are at the Seaport by way of a cruise line Don't take their bus - take the train try for the delux train It is much less than the bus and more comfortable
Buses are for the adventuresome . Taxies are fine as long as you set the price befor you get in :-))
The place looks nice and thats a lovely walk from the Spanish Steps on Via dei Condotti. We had delicious prawns and tomato mozzarella as starters, gnochi and most tender home-made tagliatelle with truffle.
The meal was brilliant the only thing which slightly spoiled it was the white house wine - as we were used after 7 days in Italy with outstanding Chateuax Tuscany wines...Nevertheless for the desert the red wine made it up.
